Issue with my HP xp cd key

Hey,

My mother in law asked me to fix her HP computer. I did a fresh format and with the confidence I put her cd key which was on the case when os asked for it-it said it was invalid.

FYI.

-Her hp was purchased with xp home ed license.
-I used Retail version of xp home cd

Could this be that I should use OEM cd?-or what else. Microsoft makes it so complicated-so far I know that OEM is dedicated only to the computer that came out with BUT still what would be a difference in the actuall CD??? meaning RETAIL/OEM cd- shouldn't the cd be the same or the installation config may be slightly different???

So once again I have a valid cd key why microsoft won't accept it?-Should I maybe get a OEM xp installation disk or what is the issue?

XP needed to have the media type match up with the license type...which in this case you need both to be OEM.

Luckily this has been changed with Vista and Windows 7, but XP has always needed them to match. If you get an OEM CD it should be fine.

Someone else can confirm, but XP SP3 discs don't need a key entered, much the same way Vista and Windows 7 work. I don't know if you'd be able to slip stream your disc (should be done already, if you are supporting other systems), and then enter the OEM key in later, after XP is installed or not. I've never done this, so I caan't say it would work or not.

So you saying that ALL Hp's,Dell's etc... need OEM version CD???-and it should work? What about the sp version?-will that make a difference?

It should even say OEM on the COA sticker. I reinstalled an HP this weekend using my own integrated XP OEM disc. Works just fine.
 
Yeah, unless you installed another version of XP, then that OEM system will come with an OEM license...and if the sticker is on the case, it is an OEM license for sure.

As for the CPU, I am loving it. I just got it in December, and it is tearing apart my DVD conversions in Handbrake.
