I've been trying to figure out why I keep seeing the access light come on my USB drive. Thought maybe there was a short in the ribbon cable inside the enclosure but this issue continues. Have scanned for viruses, adware/spyware and checked my msconfig file.

Concerned what this issue might be.

Anyone have any ideas?

there is no issue - it is windows just making sure the drive is alive and active. all my USB drives do this, even with no data on the drives.

hmmm...been running this drive for some time now. Sits pretty close to me and this has been going on for maybe about a month. Did't do this previous. Been running XP for some time.

mine turns on and off.

i doubt its any virus. try trendmicro if you seriously think it is

Do you have File Indexing Services running on this external drive?

File Index Service.

Unless WinXP Pro is running it on it's own I have not installed anything. Seems familiar though.

How can I check?

Windows Explorer > RClick Drive Letter > Properties > Uncheck "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk fpor fast file searching"

alternately if you don't want it at all
Control Panel > add\remove programs > add\remove window components > uncheck Indexing Services

I'm doing this now. Going to do it for the drive, folders and subfolders.

This is for fast access to finding files via a file search, correct?

Thanks!

hmm.... have done just what you recommended to do but the problem still occurs.

Anyone??
