My ISP keeps suspending me because they say I have a virus. I formatted all the computers in my household and put MSE on them. The problem was stilling happening so I did a little research and I found out it could be my actual cable modem. So I went in and exchanged my modem for another one. Once again they suspended my internet. I formatted again and scanned all of the computers. My wireless is under WPA2 encryption. However, I don't think it's any of my neighbors or anybody hacking me. This is really pissing me off and my other internet provider in my area only has Wi-Fi, not DSL or Cable, which is really slow. I'm really lost here guys can somebody help me out?

Can they tell you what the virus is? Are you being a spam bot? Seems shady all they say is "you have a virus, good day"

other thought would be someone cloanedyour modems mac

Are the computers running wired or wireless?

I would turn off your wireless network cards, plug all the computers into a HUB, and set one machine up with Wireshark. Take a look and see what all is being pushed out by the computers. This will give you an idea if the computers are doing something when they shouldn't be or not.

At one point I had a USB memory stick that was a Linux install, and Wireshark. I think I downloaded it from somewhere. I started it up, plugged everthing into a HUB (NOTE: NOT a switch, but a HUB), and let it see what all was going out from where.

They should give you more information. The virus name, for example.

Of course, depending on how long it takes for them to send notices, shut down your network for a couple days, then tell them it couldn't have been you.

You could throw in a packet sniffer (Windows has one for Windows Server, and I know Linux has a few) and see if there is any unusual traffic on your network.

But, if they want to help out, they'd give you a lot more information.

Yeah, they pretty much say "you have a virus, good day". I originally thought it was somebody cloning my modem's MAC too however, I switched the modem. I'm also not very knowledgeable with networking so I'm not sure what Wireshark does.

Well it's time to bone up!

Wireshark is a packet sniffer, showing you all packet frames that your network card can see. From a capture, you can have it list the endpoints of conversations observed - any IPs you don't anticipate are suspect and should be investigated.

Anything look out of the ordinary guys?

I just got off the phone with them for about an hour. They told me it was the "IRCbot" trojan?

IRCbot? Like... an actual IRC bot? I mean, there's some pretty crazy names for trojans so I'm guessing at least one out of the millions is really named that, but still, it would make me laugh if I was running a little shell bot in an IRC server to play, say, trivia or something and they send me a notice saying it was a virus :p

actual an ircbot trojan can turn your computer into a middle-man for p2p file transfers.

I had to clean up a cop's computer once. His account had been disabled a 3rd time for illegal distribution of copyrighted content. Our policy was strike 3 and you must pay us to clean up your computer if you still want your 'net.

the file in question was non-existant on his computer. But he had some odd trial-version AV that had expired like 2 years prior.

and there was an ircbot trojan of some sort.
