Not supported, remember that. Generally doesn't gain you a whole lot, and can cause some fun connection issues :(
If you're really slamming the network, it might get you something.
 
No we aren't slamming it at all. Two ESX hosts one MD3000i single controller card dual port. they have preferred paths setup.

I did enable it for one of the ESX Hosts today, seems to be working fine. Haven't done any real testing with it so far.

What kind of speeds should i be expecting? my average is around 94.1mb/sec. Wondering if I can squeeze anymore out of it.

we need to know some specs on the SAN....

SAS? # of drives, spindle speeds, how the SAN is connected, etc....i'd say 94MB/s is a little low, but i dont know the specs of the network/hardware so i'll reserve final judgement....
 
Alright. SAN is an MD3000i connected to a Powerconnect 5424

the drives I'm testing on right now are SATA 7200rpm, raid 5, 6 drives total.

I was thrown into this head first and i'm learning. trying to tweak things and get them into best practices.

First test (on left) was reading, second test was write.
 
something is definitely going on there....only ~1.4MB write speed confirms that. almost makes me think one of the drives in the array is toast. thats first guess, but one would think the SAN would alert you of that.

this would seem really elementary, but if you can, just for SnG's i'd dive into the array and make sure everything is seated well(cables, power, etc)

also if possible, make sure the port the SAN is on for the switch is turned to auto/full duplex. just double checking that its actually at gigabit speeds here....when all else fails my mantra is KISS....keep it simple stupid. :p

it's usually the simple stuff that'll bite you on the rear.
 
yeah Dell Tech support is having me upgrade the firmware as we have started receiving the following error message-

Data/consistency mismatch on virtual disk Component type.

He said their was a bug in the firmware that would cause virtual disk corruption. scary.

Funny thing is the array is in an optimal status.
 
here was the disk performance from our SAS drives does this seem right??? crazy difference in numbers. is it because I didn't do RDM?

Couldn't seem to get a write to run though. I think this is because its a virtual disk and not a RDM

Ran it a second time and I average right at 1.5gb/sec

Seems firmware update has fixed the issue, also been scrubbing the logs and found that one of the drives might be failing. working with dell to pick it apart and narrow down the exact cause.

Ran another test last night and was getting around 60ish mb/sec on write and 90 on reads
