ISA SBC's As an upgrade ?

What i want to do is resurect my old 386 system A) Becasue im a nostalgic fool and B) becuase i can :)

SO what i wanted to know was has any one ever used a SBC (single board computer), which commonly interface off the ISA bus as a upgrade, sort of the idea being that the system runs compleatly from the SBC when power is applied, ideas any one ?
 
I don't fully understand the situation you're in. Do you:

1)Have a new PC you want to put the SBC into so you have a 386 in your current comp?
2)Have a broken 386 you'll install the SBC into so you have a 386 in a 386 case?
 
I'm no SBC expert, but I always thought SBCs just plugged into a passive backplane. I've never heard of SBCs as an upgrade option for a regular computer. I'm just having a hard time figuring out how it will all work. Your current 386 will still be trying to talk to the bus and then when you put the SBC in it will be trying to talk to the bus. Unless you found one that is specifically designed to be an upgrade for a computer that can coexist with your current hardware(kinda like the PC plugin card for the macs) then I just can't see it working.
 
I have an old 386 i want to install a newer SBC (Pentium 3 probly) into so that i can use it as a workstaiton, rather than mod the case and installing a passive backplane. Im hoping that the voltages being present at the ISA slot will be enough to run the SBC off. From what youve said tho ill have to seperate the exisitng bus from the motehrboard in order to prevent cross talk.
 
Why not just put a new motherboard in? Hell, you could probably even get a new case + new motherboard cheaper than a pentium 3 SBC. To do what you want to do you will need to compare the schematic of a passive backplane to the schematic of your motherboard and cut the proper traces.

edit: you will also have to take into consideration the power usage of the SBC and make sure that old 386 motherboard can deliver it.
 
Well the project stems more from nostaliga than any thing else, but youve given me the main points i need to concider so ill investigate it deeper from here on. thanks.
