Is7 chipset cooling

Do you think I could get away with pulling off the foam shim, or should I just leave it be; because after I tried to reseat it, it seems to be rubbing up against the chip set core...dampering my temperatures. They were 26 degress, celcius, and that was before I added Artic Silver 5. After they are around 30 and these are just the idle temps. I know that the foam shim is really making alot of un nescessary contact with the core and fore the looks of it its really starting to take its tool. I guess what I'm trying to ask here is: is the shim really needed, or will I crack the core if i take it off?

I never use shim and I use ~500 kg slk-800. You just got to be careful when putting in the heatsink is all.

I think he's talking about the IS7s northbridge, not the CPU.

Anyways, addressing the issue started by the thread starter, if you're planning on reinstalling the stock IS7 chipset fan, it should be OK as long as you don't push too hard when reinstalling the HSF without the shim.

Even on my mobo, I've put a relatively heavy Swiftech MCX-159R chipset cooler with no problem. My mobo didn't even have a shim to protect the bare die. Yet, there were no problems.

I say, use caution and go for it.
