Is XBMC = media browser?

are they pretty much doing the same thing, i.e., media management so you basically just need one or another?
 
No. XBMC is more stand alone. Media browser uses media center. Both can launch external players. Media management is a little bit different.
 
Thanks man. I think I recognized you. I pretty much followed your instructions a little over a year ago thus I have VMC with media browser as well. They worked very well. I have a win7 laying around so I'm thinking to update my htpc to 7MC. Also, hope I can "play" mkv with tech preview(?) with my xbox 360. BTW, any other options for playing back mkv through xobx a year later after my original post?

I can't help you with that. While I do have an xbox I don't/can't use it to play back the bulk of my video.
