is X box 360 better than:

Yes but nothing you can't already do with a PC but better.

Yes, show me how to play back recorded HDTV content from a media center PC for under 300.00.

Don't forget PC's are also running the operating system and other background utilities, whereas the Xbox will be running its own OS, which more than likely uses a fraction of the resources PCs use. I would imagine most of its resources are used toward the game.

My comcast tuner plays back HDTV for about $10 a month. lol Well as I said to each his own. Some people like the Xbox 360 and some don't. There are many people who do not have nice computers and have never seen graphics that are found on a Xbox 360. To them it is revolutionary.

friends of mine wated in line for theirs, and played COD2 on the 360, and unless you have an amazing TV, the aliasing is really bad

This is the dumbest thing I've read in a long time.

I'm just stating what anandtech said.

Also the memory bandwidth is around 22.4 gbs according to hardocp..what is the GTX256?...38.x gbs? 54.xgbs for the GTX 512?

The xbox's chip must be clocked at 200mhz or something because it only uses a heatsink.

You might want to start posting evidences before calling comments dumb.

Hard to say that it is better than a SLI setup but I would like to know how much you would have to spend for computer parts from scratch to equal or beat a xbox360's power. Lets see what they can do when they get a hang of using the multicore cpu.

In the long run you will see a lot more efficiency squeezed out consoles than are ever squeezed out of a pc. Look at games on the ps2. That is hardware with a gpu about the power of a geforce 1 ddr. Not bad to be able to play gran turismo in hd.

I think there is one thing a lot of people are overlooking with the X360 in terms of graphics and that is optimization. If you have a PC that on paper is very close to the X360 in terms of performance, the X360 will always have better graphics and/or performance because every X360 is the same, unlike the thousands of possible hardware combinations on PC's.

For the most part (other than the aliasing), I think X360 games are pretty much on par with current PC games graphically. While I would say FEAR looks better than any X360 FPS, PGR3 looks better than any PC racer.

I expect the X360 to stay on about on par with PC games graphically for a year or so as the console developers learn more about getting the most out of the system.

Let's put it this way. The first Xbox runs on a geforce 3. Try running Farcry with lowest settings on a geforce 3 on your computer.. it's crappy. The video cards on consoles are modified, so you can't really compare to PC's versions.

even if u run the xbox resolution at it highest it cant outrun an pc. it can't run n4spd most wanted at 1600x1200. 360 only runs at 30fps.

Well, Windows itself barely uses any CPU time when it's idling. Even when I'm running a multitude of stuff, like messenger, outlook, antivirus/spyware, bit torrent etc, the cpu meter is barely registering anything. So the argument that PCs get slowed down by background tasks is simply not true... unless you want to play games and, say, encode video at the same time... in which case you should get a dual core CPU :)

It runs at about 500mhz. And the X360's CPU and GPU are air cooled with two fans and a duct.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up...must have over looked it. I don't know why hardocp said something about the GPU having only a headsink on it much like ones found on the old voodoo3.

And lets not forget that games such as Farcry was heavely modified running at pretty low resolutions....plus the xbox hardware has a geforce 4.

When the xbox first came out, the graphics chip was one generation ahead of the geforce 3.

The Xbox 360 however is not as powerful compared to the GTX based on numbers. But programmers are MORE focused on their coding for a consistant hardware which makes game run/look better than the PC.

I'm pretty damn amazed at how the geforce 4 is holding up in the original xbox.
It'll be nice to run 3dmark on the 360 to see how powerful it really is.

I was always pretty sure the Xbox GPU was in the Geforce 3 family, about as powerful as the Ti 500. I found this on Anandtech talking about the Xbox GPU :

The NV2A features the same 4 pixel pipelines of the GeForce3 core and operates at 233MHz. This puts the fill rate of the NV2A in between that of the GeForce3 and the GeForce3 Ti 500.

I know fillrate isn't everything, but I don't ever remember it being a Geforce 4. I thought soon after Geforce 3 came out, that's when the Xbox GPU was mentioned to be comparable to Nvidia's next GPU (the Ti 500). I could be wrong though, it has been awhile.

Does the xbox 360, have better graphics than the best gaming pcs out there with; athlon 64 fx 57, nvidia 7800 gtx, ect.

Does the 360 (or any upcoming console) NEED to be better than the best gaming PC? IMO, no. It doesn't have to support the same super high resolutions, AA, and AF other hardware can do. The right tool for the job I say.

I'm the type of player that doesn't eally care if my game can do 1600x1200 at 4xaa/16af blah blah blah. I've played too many games that didn't really support gaming at those rates very well either. UIs didn't scale well, text didn't scale well, etc. In some cases the extra screen area didn't really make THAt much difference. Also, to me, some aliasing, or other defects really are not noticable unless I stop to take screenshots.

I've been building my machines for 10 years now, and I used to be in the arms race for the latest and greatest. Having been there and done that I just started to realize I didn't enjoiy wasting thousands a year to get 140fps instead of spending half as much to still get 80fps. Games didn't often run well at high resolutions either so I usally ended up playing at 1280x1024 anyway.

For me now, it's all about having the right tool for the job and not wasting tons of cash just to be on the king of the hardware hill. I'm looking forward to moving more to console gaming in the next year. more specifically, the PS3. I'll get huge bang for my buck for gaming performance not to mention blue ray.

Many love to say "well you can do xyz on a console yo ucan do on a PC". Well, I can still keep a modest PC for everything else that my console can't do. Who needs 7800GTX SLI to run surf, play iTunes, and burn a DVD? My ol P4 3.0C will still be handling all that just fine, or maybe a new laptop that I'll spend <$800 on will do all of that just fine. Might even just have a 2d card on it /gasp! I use linux for desktop environment anyway. My current XP partition is only 15Gb and is only around JIK I can't find a game on the console I just have to get.

Get the right tool for the job IMO
cheers

You won't have to spend $400 on a stupid XBox 360 if you already have a Media Center PC...

It's still difficult to get a handle on X360's true power.

It uses a 48 ALU unified GPU. However do each of those shaders "count" as half a pipe? 2/3's? They are the big ALU in ATI pipelines, as far as I know. Which should theoretically make them more than half a traditional ATI pipe. So anyway, it's all very complex. It also has the supposed efficiency advantage of unified shaders.

To clarify, each standard ATI pixel pipeline such as in X1800 uses two ALU's. However, one is bigger and more powerful and one is smaller and weaker, as far as I know. X360 gets 48 of the bigger more capable ones, as far as I know. So in theory each ALU should eqaul more than half a full ATI pipe, yet less than a whole one. All according to my limited knowledge.

But say, 512 7800 GTX's in SLI would easily outpower it.

And, incidentally, such a PC would also roughly double the upcoming Playstation 3 as well. The Playstation 3 is most likely going to use a 550 mhz 7800 GTX (called the RSX). So you can already exceed those stats easily with an SLI PC, and PS3 wont be out until Fall 2006 in the USA at the earliest.

So far the games aren't that impressive.

As far as Qauke, COD2 runs better on X360. Everybody screamed it was because of shoddy work by the PC team. So one could say the same in reverse about Qauke. It's obviously just a shoddy unoptimized port of the PC game, and that's why it runs poorly, not power.

plus all the xbox games are designed to run on one piece of hardware right? So optimization can be done for the xbox 360 to get the games running and looking better vs. a PC game that can run on any combination of hardware...

Well lets see go out and buy an Xbox for $400 or go buy a new graphics card for $400. That sounds like a no brainer to me.... I would pick the graphics card. My point is that people complain about computers and say you have to upgrade all the time.... Well you have to upgrade everytime a new Xbox comes out. It is no different. My 8 year old son's Xbox collects dust in his room. When his friends come over they play on the computers. To each his own but I prefer the computer.

But they dont come out with a new Xbox every 6 months to a year do they?

Not really...... if you only focus on what XBOX360 does gaming wise, you are shorting all the extra features. I guess unless you have a Media Center PC recording HDTV broadcasts and such it is hard to grasp.
