I have been trying to figure out what I would rather have and I have narrowed my search down to the Samsung 205BW or the Samsung 204B. I'm leaning more toward the 205BW widescreen but is there anything I should know about widescreen gaming? I have never had one before and just wanted to get a heads up before I make a purchase. Are all games compatible with them or do I need to do something special? Also the 205BW is best used at 1680 x 1050 resolution but I have never seen any game support this resolution, is there something special I need to do to get this resolution for like Quake 4? (Sorry I don't know much about this monitor stuff :() Anyways, thanks for all the info you can give. :)

Well, not ALL games support widescreen but more companies and developers are becoming aware that lots of people are buying widescreen monitors. For the games that don't support widescreen resolutions, check out the excellent widescreengamingforums.com. A lot of people there are dedicated to getting games working at widescreen resolutions. Most of the fixes are simply command line adjustments which take seconds to do. It may sound like a pain but widescreen gaming is well worth it. I had doubts before I got my first WS monitor but now I can't imagine not having it. It's great.

older games might have to be scretched out but patches might fix that

I don't think it is a problem for newer games

As noted above, check out the WIDESCREEN GAMING forums. It's a great resource and you can pretty much find out most of what you'll need there, if not all.

They have a relatively exhaustive master list of games that support widescreen or will run it via an .ini hack.

They also have a solutions forum where widescreen options are discussed for recent games.

Give em a look-see.

Thanks for the link to widescreen gaming forum Phobic, awesome website! I'm pretty much positive i'm going to be getting a widescreen monitor now. I play alot of shooters, Quake 3, Quake 4, the UT series and being able to see more of what is around me with widescreen is an advantage in itself. Not to mention it looks better. :D

Hi whatever you do don't buy a Samsung 205BW or the Samsung 204B. They are terrible monitors and totally lie on thier response times..major blur in gaming. I had one which has turned me off from samsung for like ever, well plus thier HDD's which lie about random access speed.. but anyway you can read review here.

LG 2000C FTW

I've got a Samsung 204B and love it. I notice no ghosting or blurring. The colors need some tweaking, but I'm very satisfied with the monitor. I'm entertaining the idea of getting another for a dual screen setup.

Try something like that LG suggested then I dare you to evangelize the 204B like that. ;) i thnk they are about the same price....

LG 2000C and Samsung 204B. The LG is $210 more than the Samsung, and $270 more after you submit the rebate that is currently being offered at Newegg. The Samsung is a pretty good value at its pricepoint, which is usually <$300. I would certainly expect a monitor that costs $200-$250 more than the samsung to perform better, but that is why it costs more. Either that or because it's shiny :D. <3 shiny things.

And concerning the 205BW. I've had mine since saturday and I really like it. Half-Life 2 and Titan Quest look great in widescreen. IMO it's a darn good monitor for the price.
