Is this worth the effort?

I can get this card for $200, it looks like a nice bump from my 6600GT (which I can sell to a friend for about what I paid for it). So price really isn't an issue for me, but is it worth the effort? The benches I have seen say yes, but I am feeling lazy today, so give me some feedback. Also, any issues with ATIs current drivers and nForce 4 boards? Anything I should be aware of or any reason not to do this besides being a bum?

I play mostly WoW, HL2/CS:S and the Splinter Cell games at 1280x1024, I assume this would mostly allow me higher AA/AF settings as my framerates are pretty good across the board for these games.

This a poor time to buy a video card. Wait until NVIDIA launches its next card (next week) and see what happens to pricing.

Kick, while I agree with you, I would basically be getting this card for around $10 and the hour it will take me to uninstall old drivers/boot in to safe mode and run driver cleaner/swap cards/install ATI drivers/play. Plus, I really don't have any extra $$$ for upgrades right now (just got back from 4 days in New Orleans and spent more on tits and beer than I expected), but if I could bump my AA/AF in WoW and get a rock steady framerate in CS:S it strikes me as worth it.

So yes, in a typical circumstance I would say the same thing you did, but a friend of mine works at a local mom'n'pop computer shop and they ordered this for a customer who seems to have disappeared and they want to dump it for cost. Combined with selling my 6600GT, this is a pretty cheap option for me. But I value the opinions around here, so besides the new cards coming out I can't afford, is this worht the effort?

Read that wrong. So yes, for $10 it's worth it.

Any known issues with nForce4 chipsets and the latest Catalyst, any odd behavior I should be prepared for? Just referencing some odd behavior I had with my last AMD/ATI set up a couple years ago...

I recently built a X850 / nForce 4 system and it worked just fine. I wouldn't expect any problems outside of the chance of getting a bad piece of hardware.

Good to hear, thanks for your info Kick :D Finally get to crank a little AA in WoW and loose that "shimmer" that nVidia still hasn't fixed for a couple drivers now.

It's definitely worth the $10 and the hassle but how could you stick it to your poor friend like that..... :p

I'm not really sticking it to him, he has an slower card and he knows what I paid for it and what it's worth, he offered to pay near list even when I offered him a lower price. We swap parts a lot and we always give each other near market value when we know the part is in good shape. Perhaps you should reserve laying judgement down until you know the facts???

Perhaps you should calm down and realize that :p means I'm just teasing you. If people are going to ignore smilies we should just get rid of them!!

Do not do it.

That card is a X800 non-pro. Your 6600 GT is just as good as a plain X800.
Not even for the$10.00.

Yeah right, x800 is a 12 pipe card and would do better at a higher rez, oc'd it would smoke a 6600GT, by the spec's anyway.

Hell for 10 bucks I'd do it

Do it, splinter!

The next post in this thread from you should go someting like this:
"I got my new X800 today for $10 and damn it's great!":p

We'll hear from you then. ;)

That settles it, I'm doing it, probably was going to anyway, just needed a sanity check to make sure I wasn't wasting my time or creating a headache for myself.

can that card be flashed to anything.. like say a XT or more simply a Pro?.. if so... id pull that 66GT out right now..
lol ;)

Even if it can't MSI put quite a fat copper cooler on there so I am sure I can OC it, if I can unlock some pipes even better, we;ll find out in a couple days when I go pick it up.
