Is this worth it?

I have an AMD K6-2 533MHz computer just sitting there, never being used. Would folding on it be worth it? My main concern is not the amount of work that gets done, but the cost of electricity for such a slow computer. I might just strip it down and remove the CD drives and HD (if I can fold by CD/LAN boot or something).

So what do you think? I know questions like this get asked all the time, but I'm also asking for suggestions on how to cut down on the electricity costs! :)

edit: It has 3D NOW POWAR!

:D

edit: And just for clarity, what is the slowest speed that folding is worthwhile on? I have other machines too, so this way I know.

Your call. This is a intel P3 600 (with SSE big boost there)

,894 x 24= not much PPD

AMD K6-s 400 on timeless WU

.239 x 24 = less PPD

Ouch, almost a whole month! I guess I should have expected that :)

hmm, don't know if it's worth it then. I imagine that's a lot of electricity to get such little work done.

Thank you for posting your stats

yes. if it's on 24/7 leave it running regular WU

if it's not on 24/7 make it run timelesses

refer to the stickes if you don't know what i just said meant or don't know how to do what i just said.

you can fold without a hard drive as long as you have a cd drive -- use overclockix, just make sure you change the default team from 24 to 33.

Yep, I understood what you said perfectly. I'll download Overclockix and give it a shot. Thanks for your suggestions.

Oh, quick question... if it's not going to be left on 24/7, and work units take about a month to complete, won't I lose all my data everytime I shutdown? Wouldn't I have to leave it on 24/7 for it to fold with such a slow machine?

umm, i'm not sure about Overclockix-- i don't know if it 'saves your work'. i would imagine not, seeing as its ram mounted (i think, again, i'm no expert).

if you have a hard drive, then yes your work will be saved -- every 15 minutes, by default.

Ah screw the 533MHz computer, I just installed F@H on my 2.26GHz computer (the one I'm on now) :D

Setup for team 33, and I'll read more about folding, how to get the badge, ect when I have time.

I'll also setup some other computers when I get some time

I don't mean I'm giving up on it completely, I will probably at a later date work on it to get it going. I just figured I should get my fastest boxes folding first. I still have a 1.6GHz laptop that I could use to fold. I just need a cooling pad for it... I might just set F@H to use 50-75% CPU usage until I can get a proper cooling pad.

My main concern is still electricity costs. I run enough computer equipment all day as it is, and I don't want to run up a high bill to run really slow machines.
