Is this upgrade worth $800?

No. Try an A64 system for the same price I bet you would get more for your money if you are a gamer. Also, are you sure your running rambus? You have a 2.6ghz @533mhz bus I am guessing DDR, prolly 2700. If you upped to 3200ram you might be able to just OC that bad boy and get the 6800 and you will get more bang for buck than if you went with a new cpu and mobo too.
 
You are gaining 400 megahertz, and possibly not gaining any performance (from a processor standpoint). I say no. Like the other fella said, go with the a64, if you're a gamer. I assume you are, or else you wouldn't want that gaming video card.

That's all about $770, and will give you better stock performance, as well as being able to be overclocked


 
Do yourself a favor, and buy a 256-meg 6800GT first, and think about overclocking your current setup a little bit. That is going to buy you much, much, MUCH more performance in games than the 400MHz speedup in the CPU is going to buy you - you may not even feel the need for a faster CPU after that. Besides, don't those P4/2.4's overclock extremely well? (I pretty much stick to AMD chips)

Even if I turn my Athlon XP-M 2500 down to stock speeds, playing Far Cry and Doom 3 is still just silky-smooth with all options turned up on my 6800GT

It's not the 400MHz Processor increase I am wanting, it is the doubled FSB speed. I kind of thought that should give me a significant boost, no? Oh yeah, these D850EMVR boards can't be overclocked. Litterally, there is no BIOS option to change any of the multipliers, vcore, or any of that.
 
No not worth the upgrade, maybe just up your videocard....and maybe another 256meg of rambus ram...
 
the fsb speed ain't gonna give you what you are looking for.

get the vid card, w/c that baby, and overclock the crap out of it :p

As much as I want to go AMD, I can't. Although gaming is important to me, Intel's HT technology is even more important, and it will GREATLY help me in my applications.
 
HT definately helps in multitasking operations, there is no denying that it is a much smoother experience.

Yeah, and school, and trying to figure out how to set up a VPN, and listening to my music, and chatting on AIM, and talking with you, along with the occasional game map compiliation.
 
Agreed, I just wish that AMD would come out with a technology similar to hyperthreading so that I could finally switch over.
