i just made $225 for fixing a womans computer and her 40ish old son chewed me out for "ripping her off". I charge a $75 service fee + $50 for every hour of work vs comp usa's $100 charge. First i found that the psu is bad so i went to staples and bought a new one replaced it and got the pc to boot but the windows installation was horribly curupted so i reformatted and reinstalled windows, while i was there there i also worked on her newer pc and fixed an old monitor that she was getting ready to throw away (bent pin...lol). total work time was 4 hours 45min however i only charged her for 3 hours because i felt sorry for the woman. yet her son thought i was ripping her off!!! what really gets me is the woman took the pc to comp usa and paid them $350 to keep it for 3 weeks and they told her they didnt know what was wrong!! was i wrong in charging her $225??

Did you explain to her beforehand what you charge?

If so, then she was willing to dish it. He should be yelling at her, not you.

If not, then she was still willing to part with it, but you had already helped.

Ultimately, in comparison with other actual PC repair services, your price seems reasonable.

i told her up front that i chrge about the same as comp usa...except i will actually fix your computer :D

Heh, you certainly have a hawk's eye on your thread.

If she knew what you charged beforehand, her son has no right to question you. He should be yelling at his mom for not consulting with him or something.

Maybe he ought to learn about computers so he can help her for free.

Geez, $225 for the amount of work you did is very favorable rates in my neck of the woods. The local computer shop a block from work charges ~ $100 just to do a basic format/reinstal of windows. But people pay for it.
I think we're all in your court.

1) You identified the up-front charges and your rates
2) <assumption> you provided a bill detailing parts and labor

What more is there to do? Its capitolism, you have a product/service and you have people that wish to buy/use that product/service. Free market at its finest.

Capitalism. Although unfortunately with the increase in goverment monetary and market regulation since the turn of the century it's perhaps becoming more and more like "capitolism," hehe.

if i know the ppl (from a party or wherever) who come to me for help. I usually charge a lot less like 20-25 an hour and no diag fee. But if I have no clue who they are at all ... sry...business is business....

NO. takes a long time and effort and patience to learn what you do (didn't it?), next time give the kid a loli pop.

he was 40
(the kdi I mean)

But ya seams resonable. not to ME since if theres ever a problem with my PC, I fix it myself.

But ya, as far as Ive seen (My friend recently paid $150 to a repair shop, even though I kept on insisting was that all that was wrong was that he didnt hav SP2, so his drivers didnt work (for his video card) so he went to a repair shop, where it wasn't worked on for 3 days, before evn looking at the problem the worker reformatted, then, when he installed windows again, the drivers didnt work, so he installed SP2.0 and guess what? The card works! I was so pissed of at him for wasting so much money ustelessly) thats a reasonable price for the work you did.

hi i am more interested with the price. I'm from Malaysia. The standard charge for basic format/install window is ~ USD $13. I charge only ~USD $7 in university ( hehe student price).

I can't believe compUSA charged $350 without fixing it. That should be illegal! He should be chewing them out instead of you.

That seems reasonable considering the amount of work you did. As long as you were upfront with your fees, there should be no question on your billing.

Perhaps you should include a "Hassle fee" in your billing for having to listen to her 40 year old son.
