I have put my cpu(2500k intel) and used the turbo function for Overclocking on the z68 because this board has limited options. Upon viewing CPU Z, the multiplier seems to be locked at 16. Does anybody know why this is happening?


Is it throttle? I don't even see it fluctuating

That is normal if you have no load on the processor. Run IBT or prime on all cores then look at the multiplier.
 
put the cpu under 100% load and see what the mutli does. Sounds like power saving modes are enabled in the bios (C1 C3/C6 and EIST). Its normal behavior with those options enabled.
 
no no, its throttle. Im now enraged. After viewing the cpuz for another 10 minutes I started to see it struggle for 4.0 just going back and forth! Is there any softwares that can help remedy this?

It is because you have C-states enabled in the bios (C1, C3, C6, etc.), this tells the computer to minimize cpu frequency when there is no work to be done. If you want it gone, go into your bios and disable the all the C-state options I mentioned.

I have c1e turned off as well as speed.

Its just a crappy itx z68 I think.

Added some 120mm fan hitting the mosfets now and it seems to do the job with ibt.

what are gflops and results?

You may, if you run Windows, need to go into control panel->power options and select high performance option instead of balanced, to get it to stop dropping the cpu speed.
Gflops = gigaflops, or billions of floating point operations per second, results is I think a way to verify that the calculation was correct and there were no errors in the processing due to buggy cpu.
 
CPU-Z seems much less reliable on my z68 board than past chipsets. Realtemp seems to be good about temperatures and multipliers.

You sure provided a wealth of information in your posts....glad to hear whatever your problem was is or isnt resolved...:confused:

PS don't eat the capacitors on the motherboard.

If it helps it is an asrock itx board. I purchased this mobo because it said cyan blue and red 3d glasses included. guess what, no glasses, I've been ripped off.

my temps are frosty and it should be because it is liquified, sitting at around 25-30 idle using realtemp. multipliers are acting bananas here, really going crazy


I did change the power level to high

Cool on the power level thing. I totally understand what you mean now. I changed stuff in my bios also.

wow they sell rusty nails at hobby stores I coudlve sent for free + shipping.

The only thing that would be an obvious sign of multiplier fluctuation would be c1 on bios which I've stated that I've turned off.

using the realtemp does infact give me a different result on the multiplier but it still moves around.

however whenever I launch ibt, it stays at 4.0. IBT only last around 10 minutes or so so I dont know what would happen beyond that.

What would happen, is your cpu would stay at 4.0 unless you reached the thermal limit of the cpu (you'll have to look it up), which is what it's supposed to do, clock down when idling (sitting at your desktop, or browsing the internet, etc.) and upclock when you have a heavy workload (IBT, video conversion, rendering, etc). It's pretty easy to understand. Now, why you can't disable this feature I don't know. You should check your bios and motherboard manual to make sure you disabled all the power features we've already listed above and any others that motherboard might have, if you want to run without any downclocking when idle.

yes it is quite odd, possibly a faulty mobo? Anyway it does go up to 4.0 at some point, perhaps this is best rather than to strain it at 4.0 24/7? what exactly do I benefit from having lock multipliers?

I assume you mean running at max speed 24/7 when you say "lock multipliers"; from talk on the web, sometimes there's a latency hit from upclocking on demand, and benchmarks can suffer a little bit and others complain of issues with cpus downclocking during gaming which may or may not affect performance. Those are the reasons I run at 4Ghz 24/7 personally, and it doesn't affect temps or power usage too much for a desktop. A laptop is a different thing altogether though.

on the verge of just rmaing this and grabbing me a matx. Not sure if its the PSU which Im pretty sure it is but about a long time on desktop or hard straining stress tests. when restarting, it just lights on then off continuously like a reboot cycle without any postage.


anyway starting from scratch no oc, it still moves around and im 100% sure i turned off the c1. I just think its this board and hopefully in the near future more z68 or better will come out for itx :*(
 
Did you turn off EIST also? Turning off both EIST and C1E should eliminate downclocking, but if I recall correctly, there have been some cases where it could not be disabled due to how the BIOS was written (basically disabling them in the BIOS didn't actually disable them). Turning off one or the other, but not both, may cause different behavior.

I assume that eist is speedstep if so it is off. ALso found out that it was IBT that was making restart not an endless reboot cycle.. prime95 didnt have the same problem.. weird

That Z68M-ITX/HT isn't for OC - the only voltage control option is for the RAM.

Disabling C1E and Speedstep doesn't help, you should disable only C3 and C6 if you're using an SSD.

The only thing that you can do, is to change the Core Current Limit from 150 to a higher level and set the Max Ratio to 40-42 max if you are using the stock cooler.
