Is this stupid?

building your own case can be fucking awesome, if done right. youll want a lot more planning than just an outlay. material would be a good start ;)

your options, looking at economics, are sheet aluminum or wood. you can get them into shapes and bend/cut them into the sides you need, and attach them to each other either flush or with something over the edges for a "smoother" look. wood is much easier to use than metal unless you have a brake, and just a guess, you dont ;). if you really want you can get the pieces of either cut/bent to your specs at the supply house you get them from, but they might charge if its beyond a few curts/bends. it depends on where you go.

i just remembered, you can also do plexi. even if you dont like clear, plexi will hold like, well, plastic, but can be worked with like wood. same deal with the cutting, in fact its probabily better to get someone else to do it if youve never done it yourself, as youd probabily wanted thicker stock for the walls and unless youre proficient with a jigsaw and cutting plastic, it might be a problem. plexi doesnt have to be clear because in my experiance, it vinyl dyes well. i was screwing around wtih a case idea of making a cube out of black dyed plexi, i cut some pieces and tried it and it came out really well IMO.

so in conclusion, you must plan every single detail of this case BEFORE you make the first cut. one thing ive noticed in my recent case is I tried to plan as much as possible, as opposed to making it up as I go, and its come out a LOT better than anything else ive done. even then, things I didnt plan sometimes came back to bite me in the ass. so plan plan plan plan. then plan more. measure thrice, cut once. and for christs sake PICS :)
 
Well the fan in the front left will be blowing right on the bottom of the lowest pci card, which probably isn't the best arrangement. Also, make sure there is enough space between the pci cards and the drives. Right now it looks like you may be cutting it pretty close. It will take up a lot of deskspace, though, especially since you can't set anything on top of it because of the window.
 
power button would be difficult to get to with all the wires in the way. but it looks pretty cool
 
Are you going to have enough room for the PSU over the I/O panel? That sticks out at me.
 
Like all of you guys are wondering, if I have enough room for this and that, the dimensions of this thing are right. I drew it up in paint, so it wasn't that exact.

I will be hopefully getting this done in about 2 months. (I have a 9800Pro to pay for right now)

it seems like the airflow will be better in the new revision than it was in the old case. in the old case the bottom fan was hitting the pci cards and the top fan just passed right over everything and out the back. with the new design it pushes all the air due to the 2 intakes on each side and the 1 exhaust in the middle.
 
I really like it. It will take alot of desk space but be very cool. Some led fans would be cool also I have no idea if this would work but, would it be possible to build a cse like that out of the aluminum sides of like 4 atx cases and cut them up dunno how you'd attach them. but 2 would already be the right size one would have mounts 4 a mobo just a crazy idea
 
Did you ever think of keeping it vertical instead of horozontal like a normal tower case? Would save space.

Yeah, it would save space. But I want it to be unique. I also have a 4' X 2 1/2' desk, so space isn't a problem.

2nd one looks nice, i would use plexi and vynl die parts black, and then do the window clear...tape the window off and die it, and then take off tape...then u will have a nice clean window... i might reccomend a top exhaust in the middle of that window...it might be wierd, but i would deffinately reccomend that... also i think horozontal cases are AWSOME, so do that :) and with a window, try to get some nice cable managment stuff...maybe precut holes for the stuff to go thru... :) hope it work! i was considering making my own, but i fiannly took my lian li outta the box, and it was love at firt sight :)
 
Any real plastic supply house has different color plastics in solid or transparent versions, by mixing and matching you could have a real good looking case and NO ONE would have one like it.:D

And that would make it even cooler:D

personaly id go with the first one and add a ducting system for the fans one the left side of the case.
Get some whats called hardboard (aka masonite) and make luvers(sp) in the bottom part of the duct between each pci card location. You would have the luvers alittle higher in to the duct as you go towards the rear exaucst. I like your first one better for one main reason i get so pissed when i have to get at my connetions on the back of my case (vid card sound usb etc) your case would make it so easy :p

If you dont want to go with a duct figure out some was to use the out puts on the side. But any how god luck on it i thnk youll do just fine with it though both are nice and simple. the secound one is to much like a old style desk top though.
 
Why would building a computer be stupid. You might want to experiment with colors, size, etc. Post pics when you are done.

That was what I was going for. I am now thinking that it would be cool to make it strong enough for my monitor to sit on top. But, if I make it out of plexi, it wouldn't be strong enough. How could I make it strong enough?

after you plan this out on paper, you should also do a prototype with cardboard for best results so that way you can see what it looks like and check for possible mistakes
