Is this safe?

I'm setting up an Opti-Ups 1500b. I want to put it in a large closet, since it has a low buzzing sound and a loud fan. Is it safe to do that? I'm only using 25% load for a athlon xp-m server, 20watt lamp, router, and DSL modem.

Your Opti buzzes and the fan is loud?

Mine doesn't buzz and I can't hear the fan over my CPU fan.

Safe? Sure. UPS's don't tend to get too hot. As long as they get some air across them, they're fine.

It's more of a very soft hum. Probably because the grounding in my room goes to the water pipe, not to a stake in the ground. Got the unit set up, and the unit reads 33-35 deg celsius in the ups case. I really like how the LCD tells me everything. Very nice unit. :)

Water pipe ground is FINE. In TELCO we ALWAYS use water pipes for grounds. The water pipe should be grounded, but do you have a tester? I've got one of those A.W. Sperry's from Lowes for $11 w/ the lights that tell you outlet polarity, open ground, etc.

I did have an Opti that had it's batteries recently replace make a noise like that. I would also feel some current going through the housing if I touched it with my wedding ring finger. Apparently there was a wire shorting to ground inside of it because I took it apart and put it back together again and it was fine. Go figure.

But to answer the initial question, it should be fine in the closet. ;) You should see some of the phone closets (literally nothing but a closet) crammed with reams of paper and boxes of toner, etc that I put 1500VA UPS's in! Two years later, I'll come back and everything still works much to my surprise. ;)

If its a large enough closet, it should be fine. I would unplug the unit and let it run on battery with the computer running since that is when it will heat up, and see what the temperatures do.

All my APC Smart-UPS's can get pretty hot when they lose AC and have to provide power.
