Is this safe?

Hey,
I have a Corsair HX520W PSU.
I have a q6600, 2 gig ram, a 250gig barracuda an 8800gt and a few fans plugged into it. I wanted to add a second hard drive a while ago (500gig baracuda) but I added it and wouldn't work properly. The lead blew and got around to doing it again today but this time tried using just one power supply lead with two adapters. I plugged one adapter into each hard drive and just wondered if this is safe or if it is better to have a lead per hard drive?
Its been fine so far. Sorry for my lack of tech speak.
Thanks.

If I understand correctly, you're asking if it's okay to run multiple hard drives off of a single cable coming from the PSU. If that's the case, then the answer is yes. There is nothing wrong with doing that.

Well, I'm not sure that I really understand what happened, but you have a excellent PSU,
with far more power than your system needs & any plug that fits should be fine.

If everything is working properly, then yes it is safe & all is well.

Enjoy,
Dave :)

I have an Ultra 500W running the following...

Q9400, 4 GB RAM, 250 GB HD, 1 TB HD, 8800 GTS 512, X-Fi, TV tuner, 2 optical drives, and 4 120mm fans

I think you'll be alright.

Cool website: http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

They recommend around a 500W for my setup when all of my variables are properly entered, so I'm probably pushing it.
Like Dave said, simply the fact that you're running an Ultra PSU means that you're pushing it. However, if you had a good quality 500W PSU, you'd be totally fine. I haven't seen a single PSU calculator that doesn't exaggerate at least a bit; chances are your PC would pull closer to 300-350W of total DC power from the PSU.

And the Ultra's quality is highly questionable! :(

The Ultra I have, the original X-Connect, was one of their good models. It got really good reviews when it came out a little over 4 years ago. In fact, it's the one that made them a player to begin with.

Yes, the first batch of X-Connects put Ultra on the playing field, but from batch #2 on, all down hill. :(

CONGRATS!

I can back this up with what happened to a friends PC.
A few years back, a friend plugged his new hard drive in with the SATA power connector (not the molex 4 pin power connector).
On power up it started smoking and melted the connector!
From inspection, it looks like a very bad design as when the connector isnt fitted straight, 2 connectors can touch the same conductor.

Luckily the excess current flow was only on the power connector and the drive functioned fine using the other power connector.
The PSU was fine too.

Running 2 drives off a split power connector should be fine.

Where were the load testing numbers again? DC output quality?

And the components and build on them was still not good.

Three of the four sites I listed included load testing numbers (might have to jump back a couple pages in the reviews). The reviews might not be as thorough as they are here at [H], but they do provide some numbers.

Here's a more thorough review, which was actually linked to from [H] front page a few years ago: http://www.pcmoddingmy.com/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content.237.1

All I know is that this power supply is keeping all the components I listed earlier (with a steep overclock on the processor and ram) perfectly stable, and it's been powering my system for several years now. I once tried to upgrade to an Antec Neo HE 550, but it made my system unstable so I had to revert to the Ultra.

Of course, when I do finally upgrade, I won't be going with Ultra in light of some of their more recent power supply reviews.

None of them had load testing numbers. None of them had DC output quality numbers. They had "this didn't blow up when we hooked it up and its shiny editors choice triple platinum award!!!"

That review is not any more thorough than the others. Just because it is linked on the front page doesn't mean it is in anyway shape or form endorsed by [H].

And there are many Deer's still out there running, doesn't mean they aren't total crap.
