Im in need of ram.. my current ram is slowing my computer down. Its 1.3bg of PC2100... sure, its a lot of ram, but its SLOW. I know for a fact that 512 of pc3200 would work better.

Bestbuy has a sale on that ram for $99 after rebates, and i was wondering if it was worth that price.

Is the timing on that ram terrible? I really dont know much about ram timings and how they affect performance.

But is a timing of 3-4-4-8-1 horrendous? And its pc4000...if that matters. I wont be overclocking, so it probably doesnt.

If anyone cares to explain the timing and cas latency and how it affects performance, please do. I would like to know.

Athlon 64 3000+
Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb

It's definitely not worth it considering Best Buy is selling them for $100.
 
Timings affect how long the memory takes before it's ready for data fetch and delivery.

Best timings (JEDEC specs) are 2-2-2-5. High speed RAM (basically anything over PC3700) don't handle 2-2-2-5 timings at this time.

If you don't overclock, go for the lowest rated RAM you can find, and you only need PC3200.

Corsair XMS PC3200 or Mushkin Level II from Newegg will do fine. The Mushkin handles 2-2-2-5 timings.
 
You dont want to buy PC4000. PC4000 shouldn't even be on the market IMO. Processors dont need the bandwidth from it and PC3200 and PC3500 put out better performance at lower speeds with tight timings.

Anyone that thinks there is a benefit from running PC4000 or PC4400 needs to do more research on bandwidth and timings.

I would just buy some Mushkin PC3200 or PC3500 lvl 1 or lvl 2 depending on how much your wanting to spend. You better be careful with the A64 mobo's because they have notorious RAM issues. The board you have picked there wouldn't even post with any kind of Corsair memory in the review i just read over it.

You DEFINITELY dont need anything more then PC3200 if your not overclocking. And even if you were, stick with the RAM with tight timings. More bandwidth and lax timings will just hurt your gaming performance and thats the main reason for buying an A64.
 
This is what i would get right here. 1GB of Mushkin PC3500 lvl 1 for $220.

Anything that has CH-5 chips will be able to run 2-3-2-5 usually. Mushkin doesn't rate their RAM according to what it can actually do most of the time. They rate it for more lax timings but depending on the chips used will run tighter.

I dont know why people keep saying that you should buy the A64 because you only have to buy 1 DIMM with it but you have to buy 2 with a Pentium 4. I'd like to know when they made it mandatory you had to buy 2 sticks with Intel products lol. With just one stick on ither system you have 3.2GB/s of bandwidth. The Pentium 4 can use more bandwidth so its better to get two sticks and enable dual channel for 6.4GB/s.

But anyways i would recommend getting 2x512MB because an extra 512MB of RAM will do you alot of good. I can't believe people are still building high end gaming rigs with just 512MB of RAM. 1GB is standard for a gaming machine IMO. I mean the whole point in 64-bit is to be able to break the 4GB barrier for servers and workstations that can use more RAM.
