Is this PSU good enough?

I bought an Antec 480 Watt Neopower [cost around 120 from newegg]. I thought it would be enough to power my gaming rig however I'm experiencing frequent freezes and sometimes the mouse doesn't work.

AMD 64 3500+
2GB Corsair XMS
74G Raptor
Saitek Gaming Keyboard
MS Intellimouse 4
BFG 6800 GT OC
SB Audigy 2 ZS
PCI Ethernet Card

I also was going to put in another 120G 7200 rpm drive but the machine wouldn't start with that in there so I had to get rid of it.

Are these specs too much for this power supply? What else could it be if this is not the problem. Thanks.

Great choice on the PSU, either you got a bad egg, but more likely in this case it sounds like motherboard problems, esp. considering the USB issues

PSU, memory, mobo, proccie (in that order)

You seem to have a solid PSU, very adequate for your system, but still something to check.

I'd run memtest on the ram to see if that throws any errors. I'll bet its PSU or memory, but I'm leaning towards memory.

I was watching temps about 15 minutes before the computer froze. It froze with a case temp of about 93*F and CPU of about 111* Right after I restarted the computer, it froze again. I currently have no fans running in the case or the computer will freeze, though the side is open. I'm starting to lose hope and ask myself why I decided to build this. With different parts from different companies, how am I going to know which part is the defective one. What am I to do?

Ok, I've been running the PC without any fans and the case open for about 30 minutes now and no freezes. Could the PSU be faulty knowing this information? Is there a way that the PSU can be tested?

while the temperature effects the capacity of the PSU
its more likely effecting the CPU & Graphics card
those temps are outrageously high but then they are a little high (34C/43C)

and Id agree that the power isnt the most likely culprit
(though heat may be considering it now stable)
freezes can easily be OS or ap related as well
have checked the event viewer? or tested the RAM?

But if the power supply is not the problem, why would disconnecting all of my fans make the computer work?

hmmm...I missed that, however consider this, a really powerful 80mm fan like a tornado or a delta draws a half an amp when it spins up, and then drops to one eight an amp once spinning, a run of the mill 4500 rpm fan is all of .37 amps at spinup and then drops to a quarter of that, even with alot of fans its likely not that much of a draw especially once your up and running

so, maybe the fans have a short, or arent fully connected, or are having some issue with a baybus or other fan controller, or are having an issue with a software fan controller

that supply should have enough amps for your config
the fact the fans where off might not even be the root cause
its possible you where still at a lower temperature with the side of the case open

so

reattach the fans (no baybus if you have one)
one at a time and leave the side off, and see if it works
check each connection as you reattach them and the wire strands
and check the connection of the PSU plugs too

Ok problem solved (Thank God!). I called Antec and they told me to look in my bios and they saw that my main voltage going to the CPU was 1.47 while the minimum was supposed to be 1.50. So I increased it and it seems to work now.

Hopefully I won't have any more problems. Thanks to all your responses!

congratz :D

a BIOS setting wouldnt have occured to me
but I'll remember that ;)

The Neo2 does have a tendency to undervolt Winchester CPUs. On auto or 1.4v manual, mine was at 1.36v, I 'm surprised it stayed stable but it did. I've manually upped it to 1.45v, which means the board runs at 1.4v, once again rock stable....maybe I have a good overclocker chip on my hands, guess I'll have to start tweaking. :)
