is this possible?

i have a system where all the usb ports, one ps/2 port, and one serial port are all dead. it fails to recognize my mouse in either the usb or ps/2 port; i have even purchased a ps/2 -> serial adapter but it doesn't work as well. however, the ps/2 port for the keyboard works fine. another weird thing is that the mouse lights up when plugged into the ps/2 port, but does not function. it does not even light up at all in the usb and serial ports. i have also tested the mouse in another system, and it works fine. is it possible for all of these ports to somehow die out of nowhere? i placed an order for another motherboard, assuming that they are. thanks.

Wait, you said it lights up, right? Check your hardware in the device manager and see if the drivers are there and if they're functioning properly. If it lights up, it should be able to work. But, yes, it could've been a spark, or numerous other things, but that's wjat I would do if I were in your position! Hope you find the problem!
