ok so my main PC is in my bed room (5 others in the house) would there be a way for me to connect my tv tuner to one of the others (just so the cable outlet is nearby) and then stream the live TV over the network?
if there is then what software would be best? if not the BAH ill have comcast come install an outlet back here in the bed room
 
With beyondTV, you can have a server/client type setup. I've not tried it myself - I never bought the link software ($30). You can also do it via a web browser. When I played with it, I felt it was struggling over wifi (802.11b at the time)....and that was plain jane analog signal. Take that for what it's worth. Link

Sounds like what you're looking for.
 
Be aware, though, that MythTV is Linux-only. I've heard that they're developing a front-end for Windows boxes, but I don't know when that is supposed to be released. You would still have to install Linux on the machine that's hooked up to the cable signal. And until the windows client is released, you'd have to put Linux on the computer in the bedroom as well.

I'm not saying that installing Linux is a bad thing! :D I have it on three (soon to be four) of my five computers at home right now. It just might not be for you right now. If your use of the main PC doesn't involve gaming, though, it's probably worth a try.

I would like to add to this thread instead of filling this forum with more posts.

Anyway, my question relates to the slinbox and the OP.

I will soon have an old pc i can convert into a media center machine. I want to DVR and watch tv, ect.

With 1 cable subscription can multiple window's users' watch different things? Or am i stuck with only 1 channel at 1 time?

User 1 is watching channel 12
User 2 wants to watch channel 15.

Can both be streamed over the network, through the media pc at the same time with 1 subscription? or would i need more then 1 box and more then 1 card per tv? can a slingbox do what im asking?

Or DVR all the channels to achieve this?

If it's still not clear, let me know. I'll try harder :(

yeah i was going to add vlc is capable of streaming accross networks
 
HDHomeRun is a network based product with dual tuners. You must have a wired 100-1000 lan. You can then watch live on two systems at different locations around the house. You could use BTV in the den and VMC in the bedroom at the same time.

I have mine in the basement where the cable feed comes in. My HTPC is in the den. With two HDHRs you would have 4 tunners and record 3 programs with BTV and watch one live any where. Or, watch 4 different channels at 4 locations around the house, for big families. You must have a strong cable siginal, so I got Comcast out and had boosters installed.

It is the only thing out there now that works well with Qam cable. Aver has a beta product for their Qam tuners if you like testing out things.

Lots of choices.
