Background Info:

Ambient: ~25C
Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo
TIM: AS5
CPU: 2600k
HT: Yes
Motherboard: GB Z77 UD3
LLC: Auto (whatever "auto" llc means...)

First Test:

Initially I ran 4.8GHz through the Sensor test on Real Temp for calibration. This uses Small FFTs in P95. My Vcore was set to 1.4V. Under load it was around 1.37V. My idle temps were around 38C. My load temps were peaking around 89C!

Second Test:

I lowered the OC to 4.5 GHz and set the Vcore to 1.325V (1.29-1.3 under load). I ran P95 blend testing for roughly 45 minutes. My average core temp was around 75C. Spikes were peaking at 80C. I idle from 38-40C.

Notes:

I have reseated my heatsink at least 5 times. I ran a q6600 at 3.2 Ghz for nearly 3.5 years at 1.4 volts. It idled around 40C. Under load though it was only 65C.

The $200 MC 2600k deal was too good to pass up, and after seeing IB results I am happy with my purchase as I only game and do some minor VM work. I have my first kid on the way, so I could see my computer taking a lower priority within a year. I am hoping for this build to last me 4 years.

Should I try reseating and use the credit card method? I have tried both a line and dot. I am torquing the screws decently on the HSF. I rotate it slightly to spread the AS5 around.
 
89C is pretty hot for a Sandy only at 4.8Ghz. Mine does 5.0Ghz@1.42v and hits the mid 80s in temps under full load, but my normal O/C is 4.8@1.360v and temps top out at 73C under full load, I am using a Corsair H-60 though, but I wouldn't think that a 212 would be that much difference.

Some ideas:
I assume your using some type of heatsink compound with the 212.

Make sure that the 212 isn't contacting anything around the socket that would interfere with the contact of the heatsink with the heat spreader on the CPU.

You never listed your ambient room temp, but your idle is quite high, even at 4.8Ghz, mine idles at about 21-23C, while yours is at 38C. This isn't high enough that would lead me to believe your 212 isn't making good contact, but its defiantly high.

All else fails, you may want to look at a Corsair closed loop system or Antec system.
 
He's using AS5. While that was a good TIM back in the day, nowadays it's overpriced, a poor performer, and capacitive. The newer ones, like MX-2, perform better, are cheaper, and non-conductive.

He said his ambient was ~25 C. That is pretty warm, and would account for some of your high temps.

I would do the credit card method, but with a better TIM.

I put a thermometer strip on the front top fan of my case. It is showing 26.5C (the CPU blows out the back, so this temperature should very close to the ambient seen by the CPU).

Is MX-2 low viscosity? One nice thing about AS5 is the ease of application.

I am in Atlanta. Ambients are only gonna get worse.

Edit: I did some research. AS5 is not enough worse that I am worried that is the cause. I may try the credit card method this weekend. When I run out though I will order MX-2 instead. Just not worth $10 and having to wait until it gets here next week from CA.

Edit 2: Temps coming from case dropped to 25.5C. Seeing my core idle temps drop as low as 34-35C. I do enable all power conservation features since they seem to not affect my performance or overclock.

Edit 3: While not the most intensive game, playing some WoW and running a few mostly idle VMs, with some random browsing, I am peaking in the mid 50s and averaging upper 40s. So in "real world" usage its not too bad. 80C at 4.5 P95 still is a great concern though.
