So over the last few months i've tried quite a few monitors.
Samsung px2370
Acer h233h
acer g245h
asus ve246h

and just recently the Dell U2311H.

The Dell is my first IPS panel. Upon plugging in the dell and booting up...the colors appear to be very saturated compared to any of the other monitors i've tried. tried tons of different calibration settings.

So the question do IPS panel just have very saturated colors? or is this what colors are supposed to look like?

Eric

Generally no... It may help if you have a picture to show a comparison between another monitor with what you consider "normal" and your IPS.

It sounds like it may be faulty tho.

The pictures are not the best quality.

Acer G245H

The sand appears to be very very orange

Dell U2331H

Then in wow the colors appear to be very washed and dark and mushy if thats a way to describe.

Thanks

Eric

If you provide the original source for the test images, then someone with a calibrated screen could probably better help you with the comparison.

Yeah, pretty sure. Someone else can say for certain.

do you play games on your u2311?

if i set the Gamma in the OSD to Mac it seems to almost make games look better but not so much for the desktop lol

Also when looking at the Dell its like im looking through a haze. i know the g24 is a glossy screen but is the AG coating that bad?

While not perfect, the IPS panel image is a much closer match to the reference image. This image shows just how much an improvement IPS is over TN for even basic tasks.

As for the AG, it shouldn't be an issue. This may be a case of "give it a week or two and decide".

nice pic.. looks like neither of your screenshots on this old dell 19 inch 4:3 TN I've got.. somewhere in between in both color saturation and the shade of orange/yellow. Gonna use this pic tomorrow when I get both my dell 2311 and samsung 2333T in the mail and compare.

I don't like either image as I see them. The dells is overly saturated and reddish, and the acer needs more saturation but is closer to what I prefer. Mine's right in between. This old 1907FP of mine is a samsung panel though.. even among TN there are better and worse panels. This model with a samsung panel got good reviews. When I get my two tomorrow I'll post here.

I can however make my monitor look like both of your pictures depending on my vertical viewing angle. :) Doesn't take much movement from dead center.. just 20 degrees or so.

OP what preset are you using on the Acer? Set it to text mode and change the RGB values to 97, it should look better than the Dell after adjustment. The dell also looks very over saturated and far too red. Your Acer look swashed out,but closer to the reference image.

High contrast Glossy screens always look better than matte if the colors are set some what correctly. Gamma is around 2.07- in all the Acer's presets modes except Text and the color temperature is <6200k.

Here is a picture of mine which is calibrated, the camera makes it look too dark, however with higher exposure the glossy whites are blinding.

Settings for 120cdm/2 brightness (Text mode is around 160cdm/2)

Brightness 34
Contrast 88
Color Temp User: Red 81 Green 75 Blue 80

yep, that's closer to what it should look like however on mine more detail on the body is visible, particularly on the back, ass, and upper arm. The entire body outline is clearly defined. My light matte coating on this 1907FP looks great though. No issues. Honestly good TN to me seems to be of very good quality. Can't wait to try IPS for the first time to see what the fuss is all about.

How do you like that 2380 by the way? Could you post a screen using that one? I know that model was the precursor to the 2333T that's arriving tomorrow. Wish I hadn't lost my USB connector for my camera. Should have one overnighted with amazon prime.

I have a calibrated screen.

Your acer looks very washed out.

The dell does look somewhat over saturated.

I would say the dell is closer to the original image though, the acer is very washed out.

Either way, you need to do a calibration.

Yes, I play on it.

Yes, it's hazy.

The first pictures were taken in the movie preset.

This picture was taken in the text mode set up with the colors at 97

This picture was taken with the second set of calibration

The more i stare at the Dell it seems the nicer the saturation looks. Just a shame that while gaming on it, it looks like I'm staring through a nasty haze that distorts the image

The image on the dell is very wrong though, it may look nice for some things, but there is no way it can look good during movies, or heck even desktop use with that kind of red push. The dell is supposed to be accurate out of the box, clearly the Acer has the advantage in terms of color presets.

You should get yourself a colorimeter perchance? Can make the displays look the same.

BTW where did you get the awesome Egyptian desktop?

haven't gotten my Dell 2311 in the mail today yet but the samsung 2333T I got a couple hours ago looks stunning with this image set as the desktop background. Ordered some replacement camera cables from monoprice, hopefully by the weekend I can start posting some pics.
Definitely better then TN. Other then some gamma shift when changing viewing angles and a bit of response time lag, this is an excellent monitor for 150 bucks. Excellent color reproduction and black levels, good viewing angles albeit with some vertical gamma shift typical to VA panels. Limited stand adjustment will limit it's usefulness for some though. It's not perfect. Waiting on the dell.... Assuming the Dell doesn't have a displayport cable in the box, I won't be able to do a direct comparison until my monoprice order arrives.

Your latest calibration has it pretty close crappy camera aside. The sky area still looks a bit on the bright side.. that could be the camera though. Where did you get the wallpaper?

Stock, I would say the colors and black levels are 'good,' not excellent. I.E. on Lagom's black levels I get 20 with the 2333T, 2 with the Dell, and 40+ with the TN (the TN can do better, but loses other quality.)

Lagom's gradient banding image is usually pretty good for color calibration. It's easy to notice if the grays are not gray but tinted either red, green or blue. Make sure you open the picture in a color managed browser (Firefox, Safari or IE9) and possibly in a non-color managed one (Chrome) as well and set them side by side so you can tell if it's your display settings or an out of whack color profile.

If the grays look alright in Chrome but not in Firefox, you need to calibrate the color profile. In Win7 just search for "calibrate display color". But before you do that, make sure that the settings on your display are right. Try googling for settings from reviews for starters since you don't own a calibrator or start experimenting with the custom color mode your displays may have.

On my Dell 3008WFP the sand is orange but the sky is certainly not red. It's more orangey, slightly reddish in the darker parts.

I have my 2311 hooked up with DVI, 2333T hooked up with VGA... still doing some testing so going to wait to jump to conclusions until I'm done testing. Overall impressions. They are both very good and have their advantages. For a triple monitor setup, the 2333T would make great cheaper side monitors combined with a Dell in the middle. They can be calibrated to look very close, however the Dell will always have the more stable image from side to side, and the samsung will always have better contrast and more pop to the image.. with the dell, it looks like there is a haze covering the screen though, which I fixed. See below. Both produce very good images. The samsung can only produce the 'stunning' images I described with it's 'dynamic contrast' turned on... The tweaking continues.... Edit: fixed the haze issue by not using the standard color profile. Standard color profile makes Dell look hazy. Custom is good!

to the OP.. I didn't have the problem with color saturation you have, to me the image on my 2311 looks great. However I improved it by creating a custom color profile using the settings here

http://www.flatpanelshd.com/review.php?subaction=showfull&id=1275291737

switching it from 'standard' got rid of the haze effect I was noticing, seemed to increase the contrast quite a bit, and made the Dell the clear winner over the Samsung and made it obvious why people prefer IPS panels over VA, even with the advantage in black levels the VA panels have. I must say the 'standard' setting kind of sucked though and made the samsung look really good. Now that that's fixed, the Dell is the clear winner. Better panel, better stand, no tint issues noticed either. A bit worse black levels on really dark scenes, but on those same scenes the samsung crushes black detail anyways so it's not like the deeper blacks help things out for those VA panels. Plus no gamma shifting at off viewing angles and zero black crush from head on viewing on the Dell. Dell for the win!

I get my wallpapers from wallbase.net awesome site

Thanks for the responses

The two pictures below are from calibration settings mentioned in the forum and were taken from a real camera and not a shitty cell phone

Acer:

Dell:

And i think i have finally captured this haze issue Ive been trying to explain. I notice it the most on dark colors then anything especially in WoW

Acer:
IMG_1731.jpg

Dell:
IMG_1730.jpg

The horde logo behind the transparent grey is a lot more clear/crip on the Acer then the Dell and the grey bars on the top and bottom of the chat look a lot better to on the acer.

No mater what settings i do with the Dell this haze is still there im starting to think its the AG coating :(

Eric

A lot of it is that the dell actually has correct gamma.
Some of it is the AG coating.

AFAIK.

How does the black on this forum look? To me it looks perceptively black, blacker then your image by quite a bit. although it is even blacker with my samsung 2333T, the difference is comparatively minor. On a pitch black screen, the samsung is literally pitch black, the Dell is not. To me the coating doesn't seem to be bad on this Dell. Perhaps that's how it's supposed to look? Maybe the improved viewing angles have something to do with it? Dunno.

I was able to fix that hazy look by setting the 'preset modes' in the color settings section to 'custom (rgb)' then setting the colors to red 99, green 95, blue 98, then tweaking the brightness/contrast. basically to what they have it set at makes it look perfect to my eyes. Not going to bother with a calibration tool... around 30 brightness and 85 contrast.

Yes it is the AG coating.

The Dell does not have the correct anything, the picture is meant to be orange, not red. Try turning down the Red on the dell. OP you need to take your pictures from a few feet back and zoom in to avoid the scan lines.

What methods do you use for calibrating your contrast / brightness?

I get my wallpapers from wallbase.net awesome site

That picture is fairly saturated.

Compared to my Calibrated NEC, the Dell is closer to correct, but still a bit darker (gamma?), which will also make things look more saturated.

But still the exposure on the camera will affect this, so we can't be certain.

If i change the gamma setting on the Dell in the OSD to Mac instead of PC it seems to remove a lot of the saturation. Screen also becomes a lot brighter though

As for the blacks on this website both screens seem to be very dark, but the Acer does have a more wet dark black look to it im asuming to the gloss screen where the dell is pretty dark but kind of glowish at the same time lol

I had a look on wallbase.net to see if I could find that same picture again, but couldn't find anything.

I guess it's only 1920x1080?

No idea. Wallpapers go through that site quite a bit and if i'm looking for a new one ill just hit random and browse through a few of them

By changing the Dell's Gamma Setting to MAC it makes the dell look quite a bit like the Acer monitor. A lot of the saturation disapears

Do you have it set on the custom preset mode or the standard?

When I first got the U2311 I noticed how saturated the reds looked, but changing it to custom (even without playing with the sliders much) took the saturation way down. My monitor isn't calibrated, but even then my sand is orange and not red.

Default setting on the U23 makes many things with a shade become completely white. Using custom, even without moving the sliders at all, relieves this greatly.
