Is this normal for CRT?

The UFO man has a few trails behind him. This was taken at 105Hz, and the camera was at 1/400s.

I thought CRTs were not supposed to have trailing/ghosting?

Yes, I see that my convergence is off a little.
 
that's interesting, and it's not what I'd expect out of a CRT. that looks more like a strobed backlight with a tiny step function in luminance offset. With a CRT you'd expect a smooth blur. Can you post this on the blurbusters forum?

I'm taking it this sort of "ghosting" doesn't exist with a static image, right?

Right, it doesn't exist in static images. I just registered on blurbuster, I'm waiting for an activation email..
Do you have DSLR camera, by chance?
 
nope, but Mark does - I might get him to come over and do some pursuit camera work on my FW900. On that note, you took the image while the camera was still, rather than while on a track. I'd have to think about this some more.
 
given that you took the image while the camera was still, one possibility is that the ghosting reflects encoding blur on the camera sensor's end.

I think Mark would be able to answer the question more definitively though.
 
CRT phosphor lag has a much smoother decay function than the image shows. It should be more like a smeared low luminance trail. At least that's what my experiments have shown on my own CRTs.
 
Notice how the brighter colors stick around more? That's just how phosphors work. The blur is less than LCD, but when you have something white moving across a black background, it will be noticeable. I noticed way back when I was kid playing SMB3 in the dark levels of World 8.

And even though your CRT was running at 105hz, the game is probably locked to 60fps, 2D games usually are, so you're seeing the previous two frames of animation there.

Nothing out of the ordinary. In all honesty, I think you're being a little OCD, because your convergence looks fine too. You'll never enjoy your CRT if you're always looking for minute flaws.
 
yea good call on the frame rate - could well be that the blurred image is a snapshot of the decay of the previous frame.

and I agree - convergence is fine - even a retina display will show individual subpixels if you zoom in close enough :)

The IPS-like colors, and low blur, is growing on me a lot. I played tribes ascend today, and I was able to hit things! :eek: (I've been using an S-IPS.)

Welcome to CRT world. Amazing how most still think of it as old junk. Now you know why we still have ours. :)

I hear OLED has even less blur (pixel persistence) than CRT. At least according to Sony. That's what I'm really holding out for. I have a few CRT's, so I'm sure by the time I'm on my last one we will have 120hz 4k OLEDs on the market.
 
It's a pretty nice camera; I have the T3i and 50mm f/1.4. It was shot at 1/400s, as I mentioned. I could shoot @ 1/4000s.

They're improving on all that. Only time will tell if they ever have a better lifespan than CRT's or other displays. And cost is something that always comes down if the tech is popular enough.
 
I'm back to report, that the double image disappeared when I used pixperan.

Despite the website stating that I was getting 105FPS&Hz, it appears that it was doubling the image as suggested by Enhanced.

Good for you! Usually, it's a cable issue.
