Hi, I just put together a budget $500 AM2 system. For my video card, I selected the X850XT when Newegg was stocking them for $115. I was close to choosing the 7600gt, but decided against due to the $40 premium and 128bit architecture. I am glad I ended up going with the X850XT.
The Newegg reviews said this card gets pretty hot and isn't much of an overclocker. Initially, it looked like this was the case. Temps reached the low 70s in BF2 and I couldn't get much of an overclock. Then I noticed that the fan was barely pushing any air.
I downloaded ATI Tray Tools and it seems that for some reason these cards default to only 5% fan speed. I dynamically set it to 27% up to 55C and then 68% up to 75C where it would turn on 100%.
The card idles around 40C and you can barely hear the fan. Once it reached 55C in intensive 3d apps, it gets a little louder, but my system fan drowns out the video card. I never even got close to 75C so I can't tell you what 100% sounds like.
Now that my card was running much cooler with proper fan management, I gave it another go with overclocking. The results were impressive to say the least. I got it up to 565 core and 645 memory (yes, I was shocked too). It now peaks at 58C under full load with these clocks. If you have an X850XT, give it a try.
