Is this Koolance a decent value?

I recently picked up a long discontinued (read uber-old) original Koolance EXOS kit at a local CompUSA (who would've thought they sold this stuff...). It's the one where they still use a steel enclosure so it's relatively heavy in comparison to the aluminum one although pump vibration is probably less pronounced. In any case, I ended up paying $50 for it and I curious if this was a good deal I got on it or not.

Considering it's age, would I have been better off getting a newer external kit like a Nautilus or Coolermaster R120? It's going to start off just cooling an 2500+ mobile Barton but I'd like to find a cpu block that will support the newer sockets. Any suggestions/links for a nice cheap low flow cpu block? Thanks for the help guys.
 
I did something similar, I got an EXOS AL at Fry's for $110 with the CPU-300-H06 block. Really your best best is to get a Koolance block. It has the easiest mounting system around and it's designed to work with the EXOS. The probelm with most any other block is that it will be copper, and you will get a galvanic reaction between the block and the aluminum EXOS radiator.
 
Are there any serious consequences to thermal conductivity due to that galvanic reaction? Electrochemistry was oh so long ago...

Would I be able to use a swiftech apogee block, or is that too restrictive on the water flow. I know the pump inside only gets like 0.5gpm but I'm thinkin that the cpu block will be the only one in the loop.

the exos AL has very small lines, i think they are 1/4 diameter. You would have to use some converters to make it fit the apogee block.

I would just use a kiilance block.

He is correct. Furthermore the flow rate is 1 liter per minute, not 0.5 G/pm. 1 L/pm = 0.264 G/pm At that low a flow rate it's really not worth the hassle to use another block.

My advice: Either use a Koolance block, or sell the EXOS and use the money to get something better.
 
Damn...if only Koolance blocks weren't so expensive for their performance... Sorry for asking, but any places I can get one for "cheap". I'd rather not pay more for the block than I did for the rest of the stuff...
 
1/4" blocks, consider the Alphacool Nexxos XP Lite ($49)

I'm gettting 35C Idle / 41C Full Load (BIOS temps), with an ambient of 24C, so it's not too damn shabby, and it's a heck of lot quieter than air cooling. Directron has the block for $49, that's as cheap as I've seen. Either that or get whatever block you want and replace the Koolance rad with this one.

Let me repeat myself: The limiting factor with the Koolance is the pump. You are NOT going to get superior cooling with that pump. And once you've replaced the block, rad and pump, then all you have is a shell.

Look, no offense, but you appear to want something for nothing. You buy the Koolance block you're only out about $100 and you CANNOT get anywhere near the performance for that price anywhere else. The replacement for the EXOS 1 is the EXOS LT and it's $237 with a block.

and the cpu-300-h06. I ask because it specifically says that it has the adapter for athlon64's where the directron website only says "with adapter" which might mean its a separate item.
The 305 is actually a better block, it's designed to remove more heat. That's actually a better deal since it comes with the 775 and 754/939/940 adapters. note that it does NOT come with the Athlon XP adapter.
 
I'll say this, my old Koolance PC2 (the old crappy looking one) performs better with my HIGHLY OC'd Barton (2.7ghz +.2v) and 6800 NU AGP (649mhz!!!, 1.5v) then my swiftech system in my current rig (see sig). My koolance rig is of the same generation as yours, so it's worth it performance wise.

Though, if you decide you want to go high end air, I'll take that EXOS off you for for what you payed for it plus shipping ;) .
