G.Skill TridentZ RGB Series 16GB 3600mhz

I am only able to get to 4.25ghz at 1.425V and 3000 on the RAM. I have not fussed with Auto settings yet because when I see spikes in VCORE to 1.48 I get scared.

(I am aware that this memory is not on this motherboard's QVL, but it is "AMD compatible")

Bascially, I had an AMD itch, I had an i8700k at 5ghz and Corsair 3200 RAM at XMP profile no problem previously, and, although my benches look pretty good for the Ryzen, real world FPS in the main games I play is noticeably worse.

Am I safe with auto settings? Would you shy away if you saw CPU-Z spike to 1.48V?

It's fine if you have good cooling on it. You can likely tweak that vCore a little lower manually.
 
My temps never broke 70 so could I go manually to like 1.43V and maybe get close to 4.3ghz? (yes, I have a Corsair h115i Pro AIO).
Maybe. I have not seen a 2700X pass our stability test at 4.3.
 
While you could - I don't see the point unless your intent is chasing benchmark records/numbers. If the PC is to be used for daily use you're far better off just using PB2 uncapping EDC from within your motherboard settings and calling it a day. An extra 200mhz isn't going to do much for real world uses.

You'll get more performance on this platform by figuring out your RAM situation and/or getting some higher clocked/lower latency RAM.

I was brought up on old school overclocking so unfortunately I'm not exactly sure what you're suggesting. You're saying leaving everything to AUTO in the BIOS and running the AMD Balanced Power Plan and call it a day?

Pretty much leave everything set to auto besides EDC, and adjust vcore offset as needed to lower un-needed voltage/heat.

I have a MSI motherboard so some of the settings are different and I don't have offset, but from everything I've read this is going to be your best route for a daily driver CPU.

I found this was what I had to do on my MSI board - Other manufacturers seem to have a different setting. On my MSI board I just turned 'PBO' to manual and kept PPT/TDC auto and raised EDC to the max value as EDC was the only value of the four (fourth being temp) that I was hitting a wall on. Or I could have just turned PBO to 'Enable' and really just gotten the same result as that just maxes out all the values anyways.

I believe Asus does this a little bit different way but the result is the same?

I'll have to look into it. But if setting to enable does the same thing, what's the purpose?
 
Also, if what I read is true, the FPS differences between a 2700x and an 8700k shrink at higher resolution. I plan on upgrading to a 1440p monitor during Black Friday (currently on a 1080p), maybe I'll save my verdict after some more fidgeting.

It’s why I chose AMD this round. At 4K there isn’t a difference besides what you paid for the platform and chip.
 
Not a huge deal in the grand scheme but if you had bought the non frag-harder-disco-lights ram (RGB) you could have gotten the gskill 3600C15-15-15 for the same ~$230 price (current amazon vs current newegg).

That bin is much better ram for Ryzen as its b-die and is even a slightly better grade than the usual no-brainer-on-AMD pick of 3200C14-14-14.
 
You can go with higher latency ram on 3600mhz if you want. Did you already try some of the ranges between 18 and 20?

If not run that program which identifies the ram chips see if it is Samsung and if so google some settings. I know there some different setting on b c d dies.

Btw the no brainer ram from G.skill at 3200 CL14 can clock higher. There is a whole topic on overclock.net on some optimized settings regarding ram (crosshair VI and VII).

The only time 3600c15 is better than 3200c14 is when someone doesn't want to adjust on the bios. All of the best timings have been done with boring 3200c14:

B die is B die for the most part and FlareX seems to be as good as anything else. Getting 3466cl14 with sub 300 trfc is common.
 
The defacto standard of Ryzen owners is just use Precision Boost handle the chip through self overclock. It's actually easier on the chip and performs better in gaming in most cases.

Being that I have owned a 1700x a 2600x a 2400g a 1950x and a 2950x I have seen where PBO on the zen plus chips performs better overall than the first iteration of zen.

The voltage spiking to 1.48 is nothing to worry about. Because there is no load during those peaks there is not alot of amperage to generate heat.

When you fully load the chip the voltage will settle down lower.

You can toss a negative offset in your bios to drop it a little. I push my voltage as low as it can go and yet remain stable if anything just to reduce thermals and fan noise on my 2600x.

On my 2950x I just let it do whatever it does.
