Is this Ipad worth repairing?

I have an Ipad 3rd gen 16gb 9.7" I purchased locally with a cracked digitizer from a guy that said he replaced the digitizer and then cracked it during installation. He said that he couldn't the power cord where it had been stored away for a while. (I know it was a dumb move.)

When I disassembled it I found that the guy lied and had broke the lcd connector socket.

When I hook the usb to a pc it doesn't show anything connected. I can get the lcd connector repair on ebay for some over $20 but I just don't want to dump more money in it if the whole thing is dead. Is there any way to test it?

I'd imagine even without a working display it would still power up and show up as a USB device or in iTunes. My guess is it's dead. You could try doing a DFU restore on it to see if that makes a difference.

How much money do you have in it already? If it was me, I wouldn't bother trying to save it at all. It's not compatible with iOS 10 so you're not going to get any newer updates on it, and it an A5X CPU so it'll be pretty slow even with iOS 9 on it. And since you'll likely need to do a full reload on it, you won't be able to jailbreak it either.

I have $40 in it. I will try the a DFU restore and if it doesn't work, I will chalk it up as a loss I guess. It does look practically brand new though so I may pull the back cover and sell it on ebay to recoup so of the loss.

No. I own an iPad 3 and it is pretty much worthless at this point for anything other than Youtube and email. iOS 8 was pretty much a deathblow to it, and iOS 9 didn't improve it much. It is NOT a pleasant experience to use it.

Now, the iPad Mini 2 on the other hand, great little speedy tablet. On par with an iPhone 6 Plus as far as speed goes.

iPad Mini 2/3's have the same A7 CPU as the iPhone 5S.

Interesting. I guess I should have upgraded my iPhone 5 to a 5S. Because I'm pretty happy with the Mini 2, the iPhone 5 is slow as a dog though. I don't do any gaming or anything, just browser/email/youtube/podcasts.

I don't remember the iPhone 5S being tremendously faster than the 5. They both have the same clock speed, number of cores, and amount of RAM. The GPU on the 5S is better though.

I have an iPad 3 and iPad Air 1 which I used to compare performance after the iOS 9 update. The iPad 3 was not pleasant as you stated. I found a couple guides to turn off/down some features added in iOS 9 which brought the performance just under the Air 1. Obviously it cant be upgraded to iOS 10 but I had no qualms with it once I tweaked it after 30 seconds on google.

$40 for an iPad 3 isn't bad especially if you can get it fixed cheap. Try one of the mobile device repair places that are popping up in malls all over. They are all about race to the bottom with prices so it shouldn't be expensive to fix.

Came here to suggest that. Get a price up front or have them "ok" the repair before you commit.

I have an iPad 3. Wife has a new iPad Air. I'm thinking of upgrading to the Air myself. iPad 3 used to be excellent. Now, it's just a dog. Good for reading, email, reddit, but even those can get slow...

I wouldn't put any more money into it unless you can verify it works via the DFU restore, etc.. If you put $100-150 into it, you're into refurb territory for the same device (eBay, etc.).
