I have no idea whats going on, but hear me out please :)

A few days ago windows started getting very sluggish. I was getting random BSD's and .sys file errors popping up. I reboot and now it takes between 3-5 minutes rather than the usual 20 seconds to get into windows... Once I get in, every mouse movement brings up a system error. I try to copy some songs from my storage HD to my main windows HD (37g raptor) and windows crashes with a BSD Kernal error.

After rebooting from this error, it freezes at "Detecting IDE devices" in BIOS indefinetly. Another reboot and it makes it past the IDE detection process and lets me into windows after about a 25 minute wait. Unfortuantely, it says the storage drive doesn' exist anymore in Windows XP. So I formatted the raptor and reinstalled WinXP to no avail - the best I can get is detection of the storage drive for about 30 seconds in WinXP, then it craps out and says it's non-existant. I managed to run disk defrag on it and it shows 50% file fragmentation - any chance that's the issue? The problem is defrag won't run for more than a few seconds before it dies. My other theory is that I recently drove from Miami - Montana and left my comp in the car at near below zero temps overnight, could that cause issues?

Overall, the IDE detection process seems to take about 15 seconds total as oppossed to 1-3 seconds originally - even with just the Raptor installed.

Any ideas? I hope this isn't a dead HD, I have a lot of valuables on that drive :(

The storage HD is a WD 80g, 7200 RPM.
Comp specs as follows:
LANPARTY ULTRA-D
X2 4400
ATI X1800 XT PE
2 x 1g Crucial Ballistix
1 x 37g raptor
temps are fine IMO, OCZ Modstream power supply.
 
That doesn't sound too good... Have you thought of checking your PSU to see if it's supplying the correct voltages?

I have no idea what those kind of low temps would do to the hard drives. Maybe condensation played a role in this. Did you allow enough time for the computer to slowly get back to room temperature before booting it up?

I'd be careful with what you do with your storage drive. If it's failing, the more you boot up and try to fix it, the more you could be corrupting your data. Do you have any other computers? If anything, I'd take the storage drive out, and connect it to another computer to copy the files off. Either that, or try booting into a linux live CD so you can get to your files.

If your drives are SMART enabled, there are tools you can download to run and check the status of the drives. That is, if you can actually get it to run. I don't remember the name of the program I used to do that. It was quite a while ago. Maybe someone else can suggest one for you.
 
Got another system to try it in? Sounds like a faulty drive, but I wouldn't rule out the mobo or psu until it gave me similar problems on another system.
