my friend is eyeballing some new stuff for a pc he bought at bestbuy.... it has a 300watt psu... obviously not enough to power even mid level cards..

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817158008

he wants to get some extra things for his rig...

he has the sony vaio 820 desktop
pentium D
1 gig of DDR2 pc4200(2x512mb)
1dvdrw
1dvd-rom

right now he has the x700... and quite frankly he wants to get somethign else...

he was lookin at the XFX 6800GS pci-e(maybe)
and an extra gig of DDR (2x512mb) making it a total of 2gigs or 4x512mb
looking to improve his BF2 performance.. hitching and whatnot at 1024x768

will that 350 watt psu hold up...

i ran it throught the j;s power supply caculator it got me about 319watts.. i used the 6800GT as my equivalent to the GS

That powersupply probably wont cut it considering its only got 15amps on the +12 rail ,
Id go for the coolermaster extreme power 430w , its what im running and its nice and quiet with 19amps on the +12v which should be enough. But wait and see what the psu guys say.

To be honest, Kingwin is one of the worst PSU brands on the market: They tend to lie about their specs (or put it this way, that "350W" unit actually puts out no more than 150W to 200W under realistic internal temps).

And even if you can find a 350W unit that's a true 350W unit, you'll still have to contend with relatively low +12V capacities at that wattage level. Trust me; a modern system puts at least 80% - and can put as much as 95% - of its power on the +12V rail(s). Thus, with that config, you will want to buy a known good brand PSU which has a combined +12V capacity of at least 25A. Thus, neither the Kingwin that you're considering nor the CoolerMaster that's recommended in the first reply will meet the amperage requirements of your friend's rig, especially since the Pentium D processor is one of the most amperage-hungry CPU's on the consumer market.

It really makes you wonder just WTF these OEM's are thinking when they build PCs with these minimally marginal power supplies in the first place...

It appears you are looking to spend as little as possible ... if this is the case the best least expensive units are the fotron psp 400 and the xcilo 450, both in the $40 range

Profit margin...and they have EE's on hand with the crossload charts, temp derating curves, etc. so they can match a PSU to a given load profile much more accurately than we can.

well its for another person.. if it was me, id buy a better one like vantec or antec... but besides that

Well grab a FSP unit instead of that Kingwin.
