Is this camera any good?

I need some advice on a camera that was given to me. I've been interested in taking up photography and it just so happens that a friend gave me a camera to start with. The camera is a Nikon CoolPix 5000 digital camera. I would like to know whether or not this is a good starter camera and what something like this is worth. He gave me a box with the following items:

Nikon Cool Pix 5000
Battery charger
3 batteries
3 lenses
A)LC-ER1
B)UR-E6
C) WC-E63
USB Cable
128MB CF Card
Nikon camera back
Nikon lense bag (feels like velvet)

I have no experience with cameras that look this nice so I'll take any info or advice you can give. The only thing I really know is that it's 5 megapixels. That sounds awesome compared to the $100 2 megapixel camera I've been using. Thanks in advance.

Looks good so far. Check out this review at dpreview.com.

From 2001, a 5 megapixel camera. Under the picture of the camera on that page, it says In-depth review.

BTW: Awsome for free!

Sounds like a good camera, and free definitely sweetens the deal. And getting attachment lenses is also very cool.

edit: wow, I was looking at those comparisons on dpreview. I can't believe how much digicams cost just 4 years ago ($1000+ for the Coolpix 5000 and Olympus E-5 and so on). Good thing I held out for when they got cheaper and consumer-priced dSLRs were available.

You got a good deal for free indeed.

I know it. Or how expensive the were for less than 1MP cameras before that. Gotta love it when everything become reasonable.

Darn. There's something wrong with it. It will only turn on when the memory is removed. Once I remove the memory card it will come to life but I get the "no memory card" error. When you reinsert the memory card it shuts off the camera. It doesnt make sense. It wont turn on with card inserted but once it is inserted it turns off. I also notice that the memry card gets really hot. Is this normal?

Do you have another memory card to try it with. The card maybe fried or, that is why it was free. :(

If you can't get another card to try, do you have a card reader for you PC at all? Might be able to tell if it's the card or not if it works in that....

Good luck though

I just got my first digicam cheaply, it's wonderful. I'm hoping you can have great fun too.

Edit: I've heard that you're supposed to insert the card whilst the camera is off... Give that a try maybe.
