This is an old PC. I'm using an EVGA geforce 7600GS 256mb (agp) video card.

Right now with little activity I'm seeing temp of 61C for the gpu according to gpu-z. Earlier I ran FurMark for a little bit, and temp maxed out at about 90C or just below.
1.) Is this acceptable? Seems rather high... but will it be okay nonetheless?

But mine also has extra heat sinks on all the chips surrounding the gpu, which are not present in those pics. (got it from CL)

2.) If these temps are kind of high, what might be the cause? The heatsink looks less sophisticated than some other cards from that same era... is that the explanation??
 
90C is way too hot for a 7600 GS. You might want to see if you can re-seat the heatsink and fan.
 
First principles suggest that 90c in furmark is fine, that's about 80c in the hottest games, and is almost 10c cooler than my previous 2 gpu's. However, the 7600gs is supposed to only draw a max of 32W so something could be wrong depending on the efficiency of the cooler, check for dust and then do what P4power said.
 
That isn't under warranty anymore, is it?

If it IS under warranty, don't take off that heatsink! RMA the thing!

If it is NOT under warranty, with your computer on, check to make sure the fan is still spinning without obstruction.

Next, take off the heatsink, take ALL the thermal paste off with some q-tips, being very careful not to put any paste on the board (and cleaning it off if you do), apply your own thermal paste, snap the heat sink back on and test it again.
 
Ok the fan is definitely spinning. First thing I checked even before I loaded Windows for the first time with it installed.

It's also definitely not dusty. I cleaned it out thoroughly, using compressed air multiple times, using soapy water that I dripped onto the heatsink (I didn't drip the water into where the heatsink makes contact with the gpu, only on top where the fan and fins are), and airing it out for several days outside. I got it from some guy on craigslist, and it smelled like smoke initially, so I was cleaning it to get rid of that. See this thread.

So what should my temps look like if it was normal?

How good is the airflow and cooling of your case?

Eh. It's not spectacular but it I think it's not bad either. The case is this one:

It has a 120mm fan in front and back. My cpu (athlon xp 3200+, not OC-ed) sits at about 46-47C (from SpeedFan) during low activity such as now when I'm typing this post. The video card is relatively unobstructed to air flow, especially since I practically emptied my HD cage when I mounted my HDD into a silencer that fits into the optical drive slots. See below.

No I don't smoke lol; the previous owner of this video card did, though. (I bought it on craigslist.) As I mentioned above, I spent several days airing it out and otherwise trying to get the smoke smell cleared out of it.
