is this a phase change bargain?

i have foud a canadian retailer that is liquidating their remaining nVENTIV units a pretty good prices.

i have not seen prices this good in canada before, and there are very few places that sell phase change up here, so the few places that have them usually charge a premium.

the unit that really caught my eye is a refurb mach 2 full version for $626.73 CDN ($510.08 US).

my questions are:
1) are there any parts that are likely to fail on a mach 2, refurb or otherwise, since i understand that nVENTIV has gone under and replacement parts or warrenty service might be hard to get.

2) has anyone else found a better deal in canada? i know that there are tonnes of places with the things in the US, but unless the selling price is less than $300 US, it will cost as much or more than this one by the time i could get a unit at my door up here.

3) is it likely that whoever did the refurb could have screwed something up? i only would have the 90 day retailer warrenty if i got it, and the retail location is a roughly 5 hr drive away.

oh, just for comparison, a vapochill LS without a case or anything else runs $1053.47 CDN.

1) They can get damaged in shipping or you can bend the thermal bus (that's the tubing that connects the cooling head to the compressor) too much during installation of the head and spring a leak. ECT has taken over Prometeia production from nVentiv and are now producing new units. http://www.extremecoolingtechnologies.com/

2) Nope, I haven't seen better deals in the US or Canada.

3) Yup.

I assume the retailer you're referring to is Kit-Tronics... they have new Mach II ST's for the same price as the Refurbished Mach II. The only difference between the two is the ST has an inferior LCD display which only displays temperature..whereas the normal MachII can display 3 lines of text etc etc. I would go with the ST because, quite simply, you'll probably have problems with a refurbished unit.

I live in the US and I bought my Mach II from Kit Tronics, they are great people to deal with. The first unit I got wouldn't get cold (it is probably listed as a Refurbished one now) and they were really cool about it, they had UPS come to my house and pick it up free of charge and sent out a new unit as soon as they got mine back.

Hope this helps and good luck :)

you assume correctly, regarding the store. i was a bit reluctant to post the store, because to swing the thing i will need to put in some massive OT at my summer job for at least the next two weeks, and i was kind of afraid of someone else snapping up the stock. am i paranoid? yes, very much so. it's just that i've wanted one for quite some time, but could not justify the expense at full price.

i noticed the ST as well, but it was listed as being toally without a display. if you are certain that it has temperature monitoring, then i will probably go for that, as you suggest.

I'm not 100% certain but I do believe it has the same display that the Mach 1 units did. Just a dumb LCD.

However, even without a display the units are very intelligent. On my Mach II I hooked up the display wrong and fried it, but I don't miss it. Basically when you flip on the power switch to your PC, the mach unit fires up and doesn't actually power on your motherboard until the cooling head reaches a certain temperature, usually around -40C. Once the system turns on, you can use the BIOS and Motherboard Monitor to check out the CPU temp, and the Mach II Control Center to monitor the evaporator temp, so there's no real need for the display.

As for someone snapping up the stock you're probably paranoid. People don't lay down $500-600 lightly, anyone who is ready to take the plunge has likely heard of kit tronics anyway.

If you do get the Mach be sure to get a Baker block mod. It is well worth the $. My temps went from somewhere in the 40's to 68c.

i should probably have posted this earlier, but the deal is off.

i was thinking that the place i work during the summer would have as much overtime available this summer as they did the previous two years. this is not the case. there is basically no overtime available for a junior worker such as myself. without the OT, there is no way that i can swing a phase change unit this year.

having said that, is there i place that i can get the baker block in canada? if things unexpectedly change, it might be handy to know.
