My question is this gonna be a good upgrade for me? or should I hold off for a while and use the money later? Will there be a big performance boost? The games I currently play are UT2004, Call of Duty, and Everquest2.

Here is my current rig:

Asus A7N8X (non-deluxe)
AMD XP 2700+
BFG Geforce 6800 OC
1 Gig of Crucial PC2700 (Underclocked to 266MHz) Computer does random reboots if I try to run at 333MHz
40GB HDD WD 7200 8MB cache
Onboard Audio w/ some cheap MidiLand speakers
48x CDRW (Digital Research)

I have about $800 to spend to upgrade: Here is what I was considering.

Mobo: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+
Hard Drive: Western Digital WD Caviar WD800JD 80GB Serial ATA 7200RPM
Memory: GeIL GL1G3200DC 1GB Kit DDR400 PC3200
Case: Antec Sonata Quiet Mid Tower Case
CDRW: Liteon LTR-52327 / SOHR-5238S 52x32x52

I am going to use my BFG 6800 OC and I havent decided on speakers yet. I already have a BenQ 17" LCD.
 
IMO, the results(in terms of better benchmarking and such) isn't worth the $ put into it, i'd wait a while.

^ Hes probably right. How ever if you definately want to upgrade, I'd recommend trying to grab a 3200+ 90nm instead of the 3000+ if you can spare a few more bucks. O/Cing goodness.

i would make that cdrw a plextor dvd burner of some sort-- you will be able to burn and read dvd's as well as cd's. it's well worth the extra $$$.

i also would go with a 120gb or 160gb hdd, but then again, that's just me ;)

and i have seen many, many cases that look better, some of them cheaper. check out newegg's cases. you will be happy you did.

also... directron.com has some better prices on things. i usually go to them for hdd's, mobo's and cpu's when i'm working on a comp design... although so far those designs have amounted to about a hundred pipe dreams :LOL:
 
There will be A performance boost, but maybe not a huge one. EQ2 strains any card out today when run at the highest settings. If you can turn that $800 today into $1200 or more in a few months, the PC world will be your oyster and you should be able to get a big jump by upgrading everything, possibly to SLI when the technology has settled down.
