Well... looks like the Craptacular Lappy (see sig) is going to be junked this Christmas... at least for me. It's been a hard long slog but enough has finally fallen off this dinosaur that Mother is willing to get me a nice system for Christmas. The only deal is that I have to pay for anything over $1200.

So we went to Best Buy and I saw a Shuttle XPC G5690 system for just over $1k. I also looked at the 17" LCD monitors and found one that fit my 4 criteria, namely (1) it was a 17" flatscreen LCD, (2) it was black, (3) it actually worked, and (4) was the cheapest in the store. The mouse and keyboard that I selected are the emachines ones left over from when Mother got a wireless keyboard and mouse from gyration ultra.

Total: $1350 or so.

However, I want to know that what I am getting is a good deal, and if not, what is.

Please understand that what I need to do here is have a system that works literally out-of-the-box. no time assembling components, no wrestling with drivers, no essential component that must be RMA'd because it's DOA. I unfortunately don't have time to build my own or I would in a heartbeat.
 
It kinda depends on what you would like to be able to do with this new computer and what other requirements you have? If you're not gaming, then your laptop should be just fine. If you are gaming, then it is probably atrocious and you should definately get something better. On a separate note, you will most likely grow to hate that LCD for gaming if it is cheap, as the response time will probably be relatively bad (see the displays forum for more info).

edit: I just looked it up and the specs seem very decent (on the Shuttle)


P.S. Why don't you have time to build your own (just wondering?)
 
i need a small form factor computer. i cannot build my own as i don't have time.

and i know that display is cheap crap, can anyone reccomend me a better one that i can get at best buy for less than $400?

no can fit... the dorks who made my dorm room built the desk with about three toothpicks cuz that's all the space i got. a lappy and a printer is already cramping things... but i'm pretty sure that if i'm creative enough, i'll be able to fit a sff in there.
 
Check out Monarch Computer's Hornet Pro systems. They are small form factor, although they use a slightly larger motherboard than microATX. You can spec out a very nice sempron system in your pricerange (that's the link I gave you). I'd probably go with the sempron, although you could do an athlon 64 system with that as well, it just won't be as well rounded.
