Hi guys,

After fiddling with the settings provided by a user at the DFIClub forums, I am able to run my system with the following settings:

E8400 @ 4GHz (500MHz x 8)

When not under load, it will run at the default 3GHz, but once the load goes up, the CPU goes to 4GHz with a vcore of 1.37v

By looking at my sig, you guys think I am just about at the max I can go on air, with this combination of components? The CPU is being cooled by a Scythe Ninja.

Since my ram is rated up to 575MHz (PC9200), I was wondering if I would be able to run 575MHz x 8 or maybe 575MHz x 7.

By the way, I ran a SuperPi 32M and it did it at 12m 24.969s with a full load temp of 65-69C.
 
That isn't bad on air. I belive i had 4.5gighrz out of mine though i used a peltier and super-pi was in the 10.2xx seconds. But i just traded mine for a Q6600 and couldn't be happier. Example with my E8400 @ 4.5gighz it takes this Q6600 3.2gighrz and gets the same or better results. Though a bit more heat from the quad but i do dvd ripping , encoding , etc so it was a great welcome to me.

Now for those of you think i am bashing the E8400 i'm not by no means as it is a super great cpu but i use my pc for other stuff so the quad core was a better and needed cpu. If you do nothing but gaming and general pc stuff the E8400 is the way to go. But as i stated wasn't the case for me.

I wouldn't run any higher than that without better cooling. You could lower your multiplier and up the FSB, but that usually results in more heat which I wouldn't want without better cooling. Also, IMO you should leave the multiplier alone anyway, since the performance difference is negligible in real-world applications.

Also, you know the reason that the chip throttle is due to C1E and speedstep power saving options? I would recommend leaving them on. It doesn't cost you anything to have it on and you're saving energy.
 
65 - 69 seems a bit hot I wouldn't go up any higher due to the heat.

I run 50-54 in winter and 54-59 in summer with my sig computer.
 
Thermal specification on the E8400 is 72.4C (that's Tcase, not core temperature), so if those are core temperatures then that should be okay but I wouldn't want to go any hotter.

Leaving C1E and SpeedStep on is a good idea, yes. They don't slow the computer down because, as you've seen, the speed ramps back up under load. PCs probably spend most of their time reasonably idle, and saving on heat and power is no bad thing.
