Im thinking of getting new 2.1 speakers for "mostly" listening to music, some gamming on my computer and did some research and this is wat I got so far.

speaks--Altec Lansing MX5021
sound card--Chaintech AV-710
Foobar2000--music playback
EAC--ripping cds

so plz help me out and tell me if I can do better.


 
I have the exact same setup, music sounds awesome as does games. I use my Audigy for games and my AV-710 for music in Foobar. The MX5021's have very good satellites. I would also checkout the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 speakers. I couldn't get to test out the Promedia's because they're not sold in Australia. I'm plenty happy with what I have though.

Krazie, the main way to get better than that is to get the Swan M200's. They are in a much higher league than the MX5021's.
 
i know **crying smily** but i like the way the mx5021 look and want 2.1 outta the box, how are the Klipsch Promedia 2.1?

 
I also have the exact same setup. The Promedia's have much more of a punch than the MX5021's. If you do get the Altec's, remember to replace the thin crappy satellite wires with some better quality speaker wire.

Replacing the wire wont do anything at that level of speakers.

It would be hard to beat the sats of the mx5021. However, the sub is it's weakness. If you can add a sub - you would be gold.

because if it is :eek: but I like bass
mostly listening to rap-hiphop and some tecno :p

It wont make a difference as I have wired a Klipsch 5.1 Ultra in 14 gauge wires and didnt hear a difference.

You're dealing with an amp that is worth - at most - $30. Wiring it with a larger gauge wire will only add volume to it (since resistance is somewhat lowered) - by about 1/2 db (Yes, I measured it with an SPL meter). No added midrange, no added treble extension, no bass improvement.

Unless you're doing it for aesthetic purposes... there is no point in changing the wires.

I can wire my Martin Logan Mosaic speakers with 16 gauge wiring and I cant tell the difference between that or the 12 gauge that I run with to my Rotel amp.

In order to tell a difference in cables, you would need to use cables that differ not only in gauge per se... but in composition. A solid silver speaker wire with an individual teflon covering braided in a star-quad configuration WILL result in an altered sound due to the differing inductance, capacitance, and resistance properties of silver in comparison to the copper braided wire we all use.

I doubt you are asking the guy to rewire his system with cables that cost more per foot than his pc setup itself.

No it aint bad... but you said you wanted an upgrade and this is the only weak point I see in your system unless you want to shell out some major cash for a system makeover (like real speakers with a real receiver).

The sats of the mx5021 are superior to the Klipsch 2.1 (or any of the promedias for that matter) IMO. The dual drivers add to the midrange reproduction that the single driver promedia satellites cant match.

I guess you missed the fact that the mean capacitance per foot, and the inductance of larger gauge wire is also different.
How about we read the rest of your post again and see if you think that makes any difference.

I think Pini is refering to the midrange drivers Mr X. :)

As for changing the MX5021's wires, yes the amp is cheap but I went from the stock 22gauge wires to decent quality 16gauge wire (any bigger would be overkill) and I did hear an improvement in treble. I'm not suggesting Krayzie to spend a fortune in wiring, nonetheless every bit helps.

Come on man... we're talking about changing wires on a multimedia set. You know that no one would use super wires on it.... hence, all I meant was that changing it to a different gauge copper braided OFC wire will have essentially no change to the sound. It isnt imperative that one changes the wire, but if you want you can. It just wont yield a substantial difference if at all.

If you hear a difference, well, that's all that matters. Enjoy your 5021... they are kickass to say the least.
 
i think ill go with the MX5021's, getting paid in a week then i go buy :D

and for changing cables, cables arent that expensive unless I get "monster cables" are those any good or are you jus paying for the looks?

Paying for advertising and name recognition - not necessarily quality.

Go regular wires if you want wires. 16 gauge should be fine.
 
You will like them. The sub is kinda weak but there is still plenty of bass. Enjoy them as I had mine for about a year or so.
