is this a decent vid card

looks good to me but i wood get a new bigger fan and find the new drivers but ya go for it.

how does one get a bigger fan? woul my slot fan do?

$100 retail, i work at bestbuy(witch is where ill be buying hte card so i pay 5% over cost, all geforce cards i can get at 10% below cost so im kinda leaning twords them. i dont need a card for games, mainly its for video play back

ok then that will be a great card and it looks pretty dang nice too :)

Spend another 50 bucks for a 5700 non ultra, and it will be twice as fast in just about any game.

If your budget is $100, buy a used Radeon 9500 Pro/96xx/97xx class card on Ebay or check the For Sale/Trade forums here. You'll get far better performance for the same amount of cash. Any card in that series can put the hammer down on the 5500 class cards.

yeah, dont get an FX, it really doesn't compare well to the ATI's in its price range. they were largely agreed to be Nvidia's biggest mistake ever. an ATI 9550 can be had on newegg for about 60-70 US dollars. that would be a much better card in that price range. the good old GF Ti 4600 would be a good cheap option, but 9600XT's have been going for $70 on rebate at BestBuy lately and you can't really beat that deal.

i have a 9500 pro, its dead, heance the reason for needed a new one to use tell i find out if ati will fix my pro or not :D

can u rma it? i second that, stay away from the FX series. its basicly crap compared to the 9XXX series. i say get a 9500 pro or a 9600 pro anyway possible.

The 9500 pro and 9600 pro are vastly overpriced considering their age and lack of directx features for todays games. The 9600XT is decent, but starts at $150. The plain 9600 is not really any different from the 5700 series. So where's the "crap"?

One thing's for sure, I would not buy some two year old 9500 pro... unless it was maybe under $50 shipped. And that's not likely. Nor would I go after a used TI4200-4600. They're ok if you already have them, but not worth spending good money on.

Both these cards were and are still very good budget Current DX9 cards and STILL play DX9 very well indeed on current games?

i guess its best to get no card then becuz the FX series sucks so bad i don't even kno why ur comparing them to the 9XXX series.

I wouldn't spent that much money on a card now - if you just want something that'll keep you going until the RMA comes, go with something cheaper. If you're not sure they're going to RMA, you'll probably want to buy a Real Card anyways, so why waste $100 on something that's half of what you want?

Just get a GF4mx/FX5200/Radeon9200 to tide you over.

...or borrow a friend's old graphics card.

9600 Pros are on Newegg.com for like $100, WAY better than any FX series card that you can find for anywhere near that price. A FX 5500 is only marginally faster than a FX 5200 Ultra.

Yes, the 9600 is different from the 5700. Both the 9500 and the 9600 class cards are fully DirectX 9 compliant, so they lack NO DirectX features other than that they do not support Shader Model 3.0 (DX9.0c) which is a moot point, no ATI card supports it.

If you knew more about ATI card architecture, you might not have made the above statements. The 9500 Pro is a very decent card. Unlike the 9600 Pro, which has 4 graphics pipelines and a 128-bit memory bandwidth, the 9500 Pro has the full 8 pipelines of its higher-end brother, the Radeon 9700. They perform equal to even better than the 9600 family of cards depending on core/RAM speeds. And, the 9500/9600 class of cards lays the hammer down on the FX5700 when it comes to DirectX games. The Radeon 9500 Pro is still a reasonable value within the $60-70 used category, and should not be underestimated.

IMO, i wouldn't get any FX series videocard, I would opt for an ATi card in the same price range and get a larger heatsink/fan and then use ATiTool to overclock the videocard.

Arctic Cooling sells ATI Silencers in various models for different ATI cards. You can find them on Newegg.com for like $25.

make sure u read up on how to do it. it maybe a easy procedure for many of the [H]ard ppl here but u seem like u've never done it b4. keep in mind u can damage ur card while performin this and it will i believe void ur warranty.
