As TheInq points out, one of ATI's goals was to allow the R520 memory controller to be carried forward to future ATI cores. Given how much was made of the GF6 architecture being "future resistant" with SM 3.0 support, it is good to see ATI with an eye on the future as well. This may help ATI get R580 and R6xx out the door sooner (as the legwork on the memory controller will already be done), but that is still some time away. Let's not get carried away.
 
Well its sounds good and the games coming out next year will need alot, actually wait a minute not even the new consoles have that much lol to whoever buys those cards
 
Everyone laughed when timsweeney said the UE3 could benefit from 1024mb vram but maybe ati know something we don't? I'm expecting this memory architecture on the R600 ;)

How do you know the R6xx will use the same memory controller?

ATi didnt say anything about offering a 1gig card. Their cards are capable of it, but there is zero evidence that they will offer it any time soon.
 
I ask: "why not"? For all I know about the computer market up to now, there has not really been anything that was deemed excessive if it allowed bigger better graphics, or faster pr0n downloads.
 
Since when do we need 1Gb of RAM on a Video Card? We have only just recently making use of 512mb... Bearly..

but 1GB isn't enough for a lot of things now...1gig vram is crazy

Besides, this is just like a 6200 with 512mb, by the time games that use that much memory, the vpu will be the bottlenck anyway
 
ram is so cheap now. i have 2gb of ram, but the price is now $112 for 1gb stick! my next system is going to have 4gb.
 
Say hello to 1000 dollar cards....(including markup)

and if ATI puts something like that out, Nvidia can simply put out there own no? theres definetly room on the PCB of the GTX

When they do come out with 1GB cards I don't think they will sell for $1000. It seems more likely that they would introduce it on a close to top of the line card with not so fast memory so it can sell for (or close to) $500. They make money on volume sales

And all dealers sell their cards including markup

i dont know, when the 512 6800ultas came out, they WERE around 1000 dollars (900ish, close enough).. mainly due to availability... now tell me, with ATi's track record, i doubt there will be an abundance of 1024mb cards available once its launched
 
the 5700 ultra could do up to 512, and it never got put on any board, most of this is just numbers...
