Is there still a decent online player base in Age of Empires 3?

My friend and I are thinking of jointly buying an RTS game that both of us could enjoy and play multiplayer. We both only play games rarely. And we've been playing older games like C&C Generals and BF1942. (Yes, believe it or not, you can still find online games in C&C Generals lol) So we were thinking we could find another game that both of us would like, so that we have more than just those 2 options.

Therefore, what about AoE3? Might we have a good time playing it online in multiplayer? Is there still a good amount of people who play it online regularly?

I'd recommend Company of Heroes over Age of Empires if you haven't looked into it yet.

aoe3 multiplayer was never very popular or good unlike aoe2 (before thezone shutdown)

sc2 is probably the most played rts atm

Really? I thought the consensus was that age of empires 2 was kind of a failure of a game in multiplayer because it was too unbalanced in favor of defense, and that everyone would just sit and "turtle up" waiting for the other person to attack... That's just what I thought I've read somewhere; I've never even tried the game myself.

I know about sc2 of course, but I was never really a big fan of sc. It's not bad but for some reason I just don't like it all that much.

0AD is exactly what you're looking for but it's still in alpha (public alpha though if you want to try it out): http://wildfiregames.com/0ad/

Still a few years away from being anywhere close to release, not enough people working on it (it's a free and open source project).

Hmm, that does look pretty interesting, thanks!

Also, I'm not necessarily looking for a game like AoE3. I just did a little searching and found this page, listing top 15 multiplayer RTS games:

(AoE3 is #15 heh.)

I just know that I don't really want to play SC/SC2, but other than that I have not tried any of those games. I thought aoe3 looked interesting to me, but if the online gaming is not that great, then maybe I'll go for one of those other titles. Maybe WC3? People still play WC3, right? Maybe I'll try CoH too...
