well, i just got a box off a friend, a amd althon 700 mhz proc with a asus k7m mobo, 512 pc133 ram.
so i brought it home, stuck in my hdd, video card, and then formated. everything worked fine, sorta.. it would reboot sometimes when trying to start, just after the windows xp startup logo. and then a few hours later, it wont boot at all. if i tried to boot into safe mode it would stop at mup.sys or something like that i cant remember exactly. so i decide to install 2000 pro, i had it on my hdd on D: so i tried installing it from that. it would go through the setup fine, copying installation files to hdd. then it would reboot and then to the blue screen install again, it would sometimes freeze at the start when its loading all the drivers? it stops at human interfaces. i'ld reboot again and then it would go past that, and start to install win2000 , BUT then i would get a msg saying that some files are corrupt.. i've tried it at least 10 times. (btw there was a weird prob when i installed xp the first time, trying to install sp1 it would say that the file was corrupt but after a few times it worked). so then i decided to try and install XP off the cd, booting from dos, still, didnt work, same problems!! weird eh? then i took my hd to my friends house, and winxp installed fine.. so then i came home and stuck the hd back into my comp, it would freeze just after the winxp logo and not b oot into safe mode. so i decide to change ide cables, same thing, took out all cards except the video card. changed video cards. still some problem. whats wrong with my comp ???!! could it be the motherboard?

[edit] i have also tried plugging my friends hd into my box, it freezes just b4 the winxp logo and at mup.sys on safe mode

Check the contact with the CPU and heatsink. If it's not making good contact it could possibly overheat and become unstable.

it's nothing unusual that you can't boot into win XP if the OS was installed on different system...
Try running memtest - it might be that your mem is defective...
