Is there a way to get the History drop down box to work in IE8 without Autocomplete?

I cannot get my history drop down to open at all in IE8 unless I turn on Autocomplete. If I do, then it works, even if I shut it off again, at least until I close the browser and reopen it. Anyone know if there is a way around this? I really cannot imagine that the drop down arrow button only works now if you have autocomplete on.
