Is there a way to auto-rename files?

I have various ummm...files that have the same name as another file, but differant files.
Is there a way to auto-rename the files instead of doing it manually?

could you provide an example? and what do you want to rename them to? shall we assume windows?

well, I'm running Windows XP Pro.

I am not too picky as to what they are renamed to. I just don't wanna have to do each one by hand.
