Is there a VGA cooling guide?????

I've seen all sorts of Guides all over the forums for Extreme Cooling this, or Water Cooling that, etc. But is there a guide to VGA cooling beyond using the standard stock cooler that comes with the card???

I have an FX5700/256 and the standard cooler that Gainward put on it is sub-par for keeping it cool in an open case in an air conditioned bedroom.

I'm thinking of getting a better cooling solution, but nothing as fancy as a W/C rig. Maybe a few heatpipes and vram sinks, but that's about it.

Any ideas???

Because I'm tired of black screens due to heat crashes in the middle of playing WoW.
 
Have you considered selling it and just buying a newer video card? A 6600GT would be a nice upgrade.
 
1. Yes I've looked at the Arctic Cooling NV6, but it doesn't do anything for the vram. My `entire' card gets hot even at the edges as it is, which is why I'm looking.

How do you want your eggs cooked???

2. I'll have to look at Zalman. Didn't know they made any gpu coolers.

3. I have been severely eyeing the BFG 6200 & 6600's, but the stock HSF & vram coolers look like generic coolers that were put on as an afterthought. Almost requiring one to buy a decent cooler before using the card for fear of overheating issues. If you look, you can even see the gpu hsf unit barely covering half of two of the vram chips. I know they can do better! And I hope they fix this issue in forthcoming models.

But even that faux pas isn't going to persuade me from buying one.

Do those things (and of the different versions) cool the ram as well?
Or will you be able to add ramsinks to the ram?

I've never liked how those coolers looked because they look like you
can't cool the ram.
 
My 5700U (BFG) already had ram sinks on it that did a perfectly good job, I don't care about ram cooling so I wouldn't know.

actually the vram gets no cooling at all, the chips are sandwiched between a hot heatsink that is completely solid on the bottom so no air gets to them, the ones that aren't covered by the hsf are actually the only ones with a ray of hope. but, nonetheless, they're adequate for stock speeds and, if you start looking at a 6600gt, xfx is now packaging theirs with a new hsf which supposedly works a little better than the reference design.

there's also the uber expensive factory heatpiped 6600's, but from what i've read so far (60C @ load, re-apped with as5? pssh) you're better off going aftermarket.

for your application, zalman has active cooling for the vram, but you might have problems getting the ramsinks on there.

well new videocard> better cooling 5700.... as much as u can overclock that 5700 on better cooling.. it won't match a stock 6600 or GT anyways.... and a zalman on a 5700 is pretty much worthless... but it does fit onto newer cards when ya need it though :p
