Is there a free alternative to MS Project worth using?

I've been running searches on Google, but, haven't quite figured out the right things to search for -- either that or there's nothing to find. Anyway, are there any free alternatives to Microsoft Project? Are any of those worth using? In one of my classes we do a bunch of things that MS Project would make immensely easier, but, I'm sure as heck not buying such a thing just for one class. I can't remember what it was, but, I could have sworn I passed by some free opensource project intended to effectively duplicate it's functionality somewhere or other on the internet.
 
Commercial != free.

Anyway, Open Workbench looks like the right thing, though it's not what I saw before. Looks maybe more professional-ish anyway.

EDIT: Been using it a bit. This definitely appears to be what I was looking for. This should do nicely for that class.
