Is there a differences between Adaptive-Sync and Free-Sync and if so, what are they?

I think they are pretty much the same thing, AMD just uses the FreeSync name.. probably for marketing purposes. For example they introduced FreeSync 2.0 which has more features than FreeSync 1.0 and so on. Correct me if I am wrong.
 
Adaptive-Sync is the term for variable refresh rate tech as spec'ed by the VESA standard.

Something labelled Freesync will likely have to meet AMD standards beyond the more generic VESA spec.
