Ok this may be a n00b question, but is there a difference between sata and sata 150? Are they the same thing?

Currently they are the same thing. SATA will be moving to faster speeds soon though.

SATA150 is the slowest implimentation of SATA available.

The next step for SATA is 300mb/s which will be introduced with the new nForce4 motherboards. I havent seen any 300GB/s HDDs yet though :D

Not only that, the 300Mbps is a burst transfer rate...it won't result in huge performance gains. It's kind of like going from Ultra66 to Ultra100 drives...If the spindle speed and buffer size are the same, the change in interface really isn't going to net you much of anything.

i would not say that they are the same thing. we can get into connotative and denotative here. general rule of thumb is the detail. sata will always mean the interface, protocol, etc. if one is to mention sata 150, this is to mean a few things. that it is an sata interface, that is first generation sata, that is capable of 150MBps burst transfers. i can still say cpu it will mean many possible types, but in general you already know what i am talking about. if i was to say x86 cpu you will be more intimate with knowledge. i can say a switch. so you know layer 2 automatically, but what if i said layer 3 switch? see what i mean?

sata generation II, or sata II, or sata 300MBps is now available. if someone is to mention to me sata i think both interfaces and hardware available, till i ask more infomation or it is given. is this sata II i may ask, etc?

sata I and sata II are similar, but not the same. better protocols for data transmission benefit in many ways. it may not make it faster but it can make it more robust over all and prevent errors, etc.
