I’m not sure if everyone has heard that Sony finally launched their official blog.

IMO this is a good move by Sony but I was somewhat surprised to read their two latest posts.

They are much different then the Sony I am used to reading about for the last 2 years.

We fully realize that past success is no guarantee of future success, but it does give you some perspective. We have to bring the games to market that will showcase what the PS3 can do and ultimately entertain you like no other games have. We need to provide proof of what the PS3 can do for you and work tirelessly to improve the value and justify your investment. At the end of the day, it’s always been about the games. To push the boundaries of gaming beyond where they currently lie takes a great deal of risk. I think all the hardware manufacturers are doing that in some way.

XBL provides more and better standard libraries for online gaming to developers. For the same features on PS3, developers have to do some extra work. We’re catching up, but there is a difference.

To me this is a much softer, toned down Sony. I am liking it

I’m still gonna give the Playstaion another year before I pick one up, but it seems as if Sony is listening to the community and fixing some of their mistakes.

Now if only I could get a price cut :(

Oh heres the blog http://blog.us.playstation.com/

This is a welcome change to the "baghdad bob" approach they had been taking.

Sounds like they may have gotten their dose of reality, and have been knocked down a peg.

Could this be the start of a far less arrogant Sony? I suppose it helps with Ken is no longer there to run his mouth.

Finally they realized what they've did. Their arrogance was really idiotic if you ask me. I think the first comment at the top was aimed at more of nintendo with the games and such. Atleast they have admitted defeat and learned their lesson.

Ceo of sony in australia also said he loves the wii lol

After a sales slump for the last few months it looks like sony is getting more aggressive in piracy.

Still being outsold by the gameboy advance. Thats what finally put the final nail in the coffin. ;)

Just wait till later this year and next year. The games are coming and hopefully a price reduction.

I welcome Sony's PR treating us with respect rather than sheep as we have been treated. I wonder if it's because of the change in management or because they're seeing the sales figures and realising they have to react.

Either way, give us more games + pricedrop and Sony will win over a ton of customers.

Humility from Sony? Must be one of the signs of impending apocalypse..

yep it is def coming as soon as the 3rd temple is built.....and the Dome is moved :p

IMO Sony has always been a good company, I loved the PS1, I still love the PS2, but I didn't buy either of those at launch, launch prices are too high and few games are good enough to buy......so it wasn't a surprise to me when the PS3 was (still is) a rip off, wait another year and I prob have one......and new tv to go with it.

It's just more marketing. Talk is cheap. Actions speak alot louder than words.

Wow all I have seen from people were complaints that Sony has been Arrogant and have made outrageous claims over and over again. People have bee ripping them since the release of the 360. ( a full year before the PS3 even launched.)

Sony see there is a problem and goes and "let's" the main person responsible "retire". Then goes out and hires people more in line with the reality of the situation. They then release what amounts to be an apology for the past and a promise to be more caution in the statements that are being made. All things that should have made the nay sayers more receptive to them and now all I can see are the same people blasting them for being either "weak" or predicting the doom for them.

I think it is nice to see them moving in a more positive manner and it shows me that they are working to better represent themselves in the Public Relations department. I don't see this as a step back in the aggressiveness or the future plans for the PS3. It seems more likely that under the new management that they are trying to let the Product do the talking and not a wind bag at the helm. This should be a good thing not a negative.

And once again it's another thread that has to do with the PS3 that has 360 owners drooling at yet another chance to go forth and rip the competition for their beloved console. I own a PS3, but I don't go in 360 threads and rip that console. It has faults as well as the PS3, but they both have great up-sides as well.

If by coming around you mean laying off nearly 100 people last week, sure.

edit. One blog by one guy, hardly makes up for years of Sony arrogance. This doesn't fool me one bit, nor should it you.

Guess I can quit my second job that Kutaragi told me I needed to afford the PS3 and be one of the cool kids.:p

I hope thats not directed at me. I'm happy to rip Microsoft's marketing also. Sony's marketing strategy before made a mockery of the company. It didn't change the product. Take out the change in tact that Sony is using for a moment and focus on what they are really saying. Alot of these new "company blogs" are just away to con consumers into thinking they are more connected with the company. Its just marketing though. You don't find out anything you wouldn't have found out before. They just try to make it sound better by making it sound more "real". Its still the same crap whether it comes from Microsoft, Sony, or any company. See through the marketing for a minute and ask yourself the following questions "Do I know more than I did before?" The answer is "No" because they are not telling you anymore. Instead, you will see minor press release and company statments come out in the form of blog entries. It's still just marketing. The product hasn't changed and the key thing to watch is what the company does, not what they say.

no actually I enjoy discussing the two systems with you in particular because we seem to be able to have a discussion without it turning into a flame war. I am for the most part very happy with all the people who post on the boards here because we can get in an intellectual argument without it becoming something it is not worth reading.

as for what you are saying about marketing I know what you mean but I don't agree with your conclusions. It is a ploy to make it look more like they are talking to you instead of to the media and thru them to you, but I think it is more how they say things and what things they are now saying that is the point. They seem to be having a new point of view that I find refreshing. I have never had any problem with the product that was released. I would not have made the purchase if I did. I like the direction that Sony has taken with the PR since Ken "retired". I think this is a movement in the right direction. I also think that people should see this as a good thing and not a weakness to foreshadow the falling of the sky.

bah! really? show a few threads where flaming does not happen and I'll fuck a fat man's (_x_)! ...typical of this catagory and young ones tho

I feel the comparison isn't viable unless one wants to talk who sold more but then its still silly. both, or all 3 have different hardware and purposes. gaming is subjective so any poll means shit to me. I decide what's good not you folks

I'm pretty sure some xbox360 owners would think about switching to ps3 if they had free patching and the works all for free. Everything you basically do online is free like the pc. That would seem for reasonable to me. I just heard like in another thread a patch for tekken you can get for like 20 dollars. Thats basically like buying another game practically. Thats what drives customers away. They should have it for free or have had it in the game already. Too many microcharges turn people off. Basically the thing thats making them suffer is all the pricing they are doing now. Ps2 never had any charges of any kind after you bought the system. Now they want more money like a subscription practically thats suppose to be free.

Microsoft is just going to be a nitch in the end if they keep up these microcharges also. They even said they need to get the more casual crowd. Idk how they are going to do it with all those fees thats for sure. When your hardcore its harder to attract the mom and pops and girls and stuff. Reason the wii is winning is because the pricing and how much fun it is with the new controller and stuff. To me the 360 and ps3 should have stuck with the 300 dollars a new console pricing like usual since they would have had a better chance at taking the thrown. Basically Sony is losing and they need wake up and smell the cofee before its too late. I think Microsoft is doing the same about getting the casual gamer before their console is forever named too hardcore like i read in an article ;). Like someone else said above its just a matter of time before we start seeing some real changes probably in a year and stuff .

I agree, in general there are more objective people on this board than I have seen elsewhere.

I agree that Sony's change in tact is a good thing for them. I'll miss Baghdad Bob style statements just because I got a good laugh out of them. The blog is a much better approach by a mile.

I think the PS3 as a system has improved over the last few months with the firmware updates. I think Sony got the memo when the sales started dipping that they were going to have to change gears from the arrogant position of Kutaragi to a fighting stance. I firmly believe the PS3 will mature as a system, but Sony is really in the driving seat as to how long that will take. I have my own opinions of how I think Sony's corporate culture may affect this, but at least their marketing department is coming around.

Unfortunately, I don't think you are going to see microtransactions go away, for either console. Many companies are looking at DLC as another way to milk revenue from an existing product, not just to increase sales of the product. Sony doesn't charge you to use their online system, but developers can charge you for whatever DLC they choose to provide. I think the genie is out of the bottle and we will only se it evolve, not disappear. Developers will try to get money from you no matter which system you own. So far, it doesn't appear that the DLC charges are turning people off to the 360. Only the sales figures of the DLC will really affect what developers and console makers do with them.

Marketing is convention and every corporation uses it to push their messages. Opening this Blog is at least a more consumer-friendly approach- which is the gripe of most people here. At least it's a different way for us to see other faces of Sony.

From a developers perspective, the Sony online vehicle is a great way for emerging developers to get a product out there (Free Demos & Trailers), while the established development shops can see value of developing for the PS3 because there is an alternate revenue stream for new release demos.

Anything that makes developing for the PS3 more attractive is always a good thing. And I am confident that there will be a balance between free and puchase content.

however when a company like Epics wants to give you something for free but MS forces them to sell it, that is craptastic.

Thus far Sonys console has been a bit more forgiving in this area but PSN is still on the up an comming so it remains to be seen how it will end up.

This happened because MS is the publisher of Gears. If this was a game like GTA then MS wouldn't have any sort of say in whether Rockstar charged for their downloadable content or not.

As far as demos and trailers go, its a wash. XBL does not charge for them either. So, from a developers prospective, there really isn't a difference there. The DLC discussion really revolves around add-ons for games that you buy.

If the 360 environment is any barometer, you're going to be sadly disappointed. Demos and vids are free, anything else is going to be pay to play unless someone is either A: sponsored or B: feeling strangely generous.

who is the new guy at Sony i ask? that is a complete turn around from what we usually hear from Sony, i hope they keep like this, might actually restore my faith in them :)

might have to agree there ..

aw, pumpkin. how'd the worlds electonics leader piss on your cornflakes?

I don't mind DLC with charges if:

- They are not required to play offline or online.
- If they "patch" something to fix bugs, this need to be free. So if the DLC includes a patch, they need to release a "free" version for people that are not interested into buying the DLC.

I am all for DLC as long as when you buy a games and it's say on the box "25 levels with 36 voice acting characters blabla" you are actually getting what you paid for. If they "patch" the missing stuff in the game as a pay for DLC, then it terribly sucks.

PC Gamers will also have more and more pay for DLC. A lot of PC Gamers are thinking that they already have free DLC when 90% time it's just a patch. (MMO doesn't count, you pay each month for extra development so you can expect content). Look at Oblivion free patches and pay for DLC.
