Is something wrong?

I have a 5200 pata 8 gb seagate harddrive, which I keep windows and some programs on. I recently noticed I only have 1 gb of free space so I'm looking around, and apparently it is impossible to free any space. In my computer it shows it as a 7.85 gb hd, with 1.65 gb of free space, and 6.19 gb of used space. so I goto the drive, ( all filetypes shown) and view the properties of all of my folders and it says that they take up 3.8 gb of space, so is it normal for a drive this small to have about 3 gb of space vanish?

yes its normal check to see how much space recyle bin is using and how much system resture, usally its set to 10% default. Even after you do that winxp takes up a couplr gigs and on my comp. 80 gig hd 5.6 gig is still missing....

well, the good thing to do would be to go buy a new disk. that 8 gigger is getting pretty old, no? well, go get yourself a seagate 7200.7 120gb or so and stop worrying about space and failure. but emptying the recycle bin could also free some space. if that doesn't help do a scandisk to make sure nothing is borken. also, are you including all the files on the root directory? those can take up some space. hiberfil.sys, pagefile.sys, etc.

my page file is fragmented into over 4000 pieces, ran scan disk and my mouse drivers corrupted, I'm probably ordering a new case and some ram friday, probably will get a new hd then, but this will be my windows drive so no need for a 120 there, just a 40 gb I think to put all my programs and stuff on.

Have any SATA ports? Why not get a Raptor? Sounds like a 36GB one would do just fine for your OS & apps.

Be careful with those old drives. Last night I added an old 1.2gb western digital caviar 21200 to my system for backup imporatant files that was from an old system that was having problems holding a file system but I pulled it outa my closet to see if it at least worked some. BIOS recognized but it failed to spin up until 3 or 4 tries and it kept spinning up and down. Finally once windows loaded it stayed spinning. I went to format it as it was from an old computer with .98 gb of stuff on it. I chose format and the drive clicked and clunked in a pattern and the computer froze. I had to hit the power supply switch to cut the power. I then tried booting up again and this time it booted right away. Then when I tried to format it. No dice. But this time the drive was recognized as not formatted and no data on it. It did the clicking clunking pattern again and froze the computer again. I opened the drive because I knew it was fried but I wanted to see what was going on. When power was applied the drive hesitated, tried to spin up a few times and finally spun up really slowely. It only reached full speed in about 15 seconds. I tried to format it and the head quickly started thrashing back and forth making the click clunking noises. I decided to have fun and destroy it so I took a screwdriver to the platter as it was spinning. Let's just say it entertained me for 15 minutes as I made pretty circular patterns :D

does anyone know if those are native or bridged? couldn't find any info on it

IIRC the only native SATA drives are Seagates. No links handy to support this ATM, but I know it's around here somewhere.

The raptors are not native, but benches have shown it doesn't seem to matter, they still perform better.

we run winXP on 4 gig drives here at work with no problems... turn off system restore... and that shoudl regain a lot of space... i guess it depends what you have running though... i have a computer with XP at home on an 8 gig, one on a 10 gig... and 2000 on a 4 gig.. all these computers are fine.... i just don't load them up with too much software...

but you might as well get a new HD.. i have a 160 gig as my main drive in my good comptuer... and i might drop another 160 in there sometime soon...

also, that HD is 5200 rpm... ditch it... use it for storage or on a spare computer... but run 7200 or 10000 rpm.. you will notice a difference
