Is screen brightness linear?

Hi there!

I am planning to buy a Full HD TV to use as a monitor. However I've noticed that the screen brightness for TVs is different from PC monitors. :)

A typical PC LCD has a brightness of 200 - 250 cd/m2, whereas TVs usually are at 500 cd/m2. :cool:

My question is, is this brightness measurement linear, so that I can just adjust it on the TV to 50% to have to equivalent of 250 cd/m2 to use as a monitor without worrying about the screen being to bright affecting my eyes (which equals eyestrain and headaches). :mad:

I haven't tested it personally, but I would say no. Using a Spyder 3 on just my monitors (two different brands/3 monitors) had the brightness value in two totally different places. Calibrating to 120 cd/m2, my Asus had a brightness value of 2 (yes, 2) on the on-screen display, where my Acer monitors were around 57.

So the values seem to be meaningless; I'd eyeball it or use a calibrator.
 
There's no guarantee that a 50% brightness setting is half of the 500cd/m^2. Get a light meter if you're really concerned about it, or just set it to where you're comfortable.
 
first you have to have calorimeter probe to test it actually have this 500cd/m2 and second if you have probe then just lower brightness till you have desired value... but it the end it doesn't matter as 250cd/m2 is out of any standard and so you can just adjust brightness by eyes instead... For PC usage ~130cd/m2 is actually recommended.

but brightness level percentage is not important when buying TV for PC usage but how TV handles picture is. Some TV have nasty postprocessing that cannot be disabled for HDMI and it may blur colors or sharpen everything so it's look like crap. There could also be nonstandard pixel arrangement that isn't very good for PC usage. Some really bad TVs have all those issues + input lag + red push!
So best way to not buy such crap is to test such tv yourself with a laptop and hdmi connection or read some good reviews/test that do pc connectivity test but as unfortunately most reviews don't cover this area...
